[APPROVED] Tag implication: text_only_page -> text

Posted under Tags

It's supposed to be for when text is a major part of the image. To take a recent example, something like post #2815233 or post #2780068.

There are very few comics that actually warrant the tag.

Unfortunately it's one of the most misused tags on the site, as there are a number of users who seem to like putting it on anything with text anywhere on the picture, and put it on things like post #2807787 (which I just removed it from).

I do think text is a fairly worthless tag given how often it's abused for posts where text isn't a major part of the image, and how hopeless that is to police. That said, in a text only page the text is significant by definition, given that there's literally nothing else but text in the image.

Rather than nuking it, I'd rather it be replaced with a better name to reflect what it's actually supposed to be for... if anyone can think of one. I considered something like "text focus", but the text doesn't necessarily have to be the focus of the image.

I would disagree with the last part of that at least - the text tag doesn't really show us anything, as it's singularly designed to lead people to think it is a tag for any image with text in it. A tag named in a way as to better reflect what the tag is actually for would at the very least reduce the amount of misuse and get rid of some of the more egregious cases.

If we do get rid of the text tag, then perhaps making a text focus tag* would be a good idea. As mentioned before, it wouldn't be the same thing as the text tag, but would at least provide a home for the likes of post #2815233 or post #2723960. The question then becomes whether or not text only pages should be included within this tag or not.

*yes this technically already exists and has done for years, but it still only has 1 image so it doesn't to all intents and purposes...

Hmm, why not? Text-only pages, as stated previously, only have text going on in them, so naturally text is the focus of those pictures. I think if the text_focus tag is decided as replacement for text, then text-only pages would be better considered as a subset of it.
