It actually looks pretty good compare to many other shows that use CG. The gods looks wonky but they are technically suppose to look uncanny and creepy.
It does keep up with the game, where it's basically 2.5D human characters in a 3D rendered world.
Because it's a probably just a low budget adaption of a spinoff manga of a video game anime that's only meant to promote the game. The people who complain about wanting better CG are usually the same hardcore people over at /a/ taking screen of every frame of animation to point out QUALITY. If they really were going to spend their money, I rather they hire a bunch of competent animators to draw them out instead. CG is just a quick and easy way to add extra animation without having to actually hand draw everything and save extra money.
If the show gets people to buy their damn game, that's all it matters.
I get |usually| as in all the cg background characters in walking-to-school scenes but these are main villains as far as i know. Plus, this is a problem for UFOtable as a studio. Back in Fate/Zero, there were like 20 minutes with that Mercedes-Benz 300SL and it stood out like a sore thumb. (I would like to acknowledge that the 3D Merc scenes from Fate/Zero were better than most 3d in anime at the time but, the times and expectations have changed)
*Edit: also "low budget" and Ufotable have never appeared in the same sentence.
I've only seen the game PV, does the game itself have the same bleak, hold the line atmosphere?
The game is pretty much just Monster Hunters with jumping and no opportunity to really get stronger since there isn't any level system and most of the post-game is basically grinding for a 1 out of a million chance item that you need multiple of to get better weapons that will only help you get so far, especially when you suck and don't load up on a limited amount of items or have teammates.
There's also a equally depressing story about cells, mutation, and all that junk. You'll probably ignore it as you try to grind a side mission til you shit yourself from sheer frustration because it won't drop that one damn item.
...Alisa's not CG, guys. They just have some stylized shading going on.
But yeah, this is pretty bad animation. I had heard that God Eater was having production troubles, but it sucks to see it firsthand. RIP ufotable
I believe they're referring to everything else in the scene. :P
In my opinion, it's kinda weird seeing this kind of work coming from ufotable. Everything they've put out so far has been polished to perfection, animation-wise, but you can definitely see where corners were cut in this project. That said, I quite enjoy the style they've gone with here, though at times it can look a bit too messy.
