It triggers a mismatch because it's a mismatch. That tag is wholly appropriate here. Whether or not derivative versions of an image are allowed, if you created that derivative we need the actual source of the original and an explanation in the comments of what was done to the image, and the original(s) that the finalized picture was derived from should be uploaded and active. We should probably also have a tag indicating polishing work was done to the image by a third-party.
This allows for a few important things. It lets other users know clearly this is a derivative work by the uploader. It allows other approvers to know to look to ensure that the original is uploaded as well. It also allows for repeatability if necessary—another user could revise the work you've done to create a better more authentic image. For an archive, all of those things are vital.
