This is a CT scanner, not an MRI, which the above posters are assuming.
CT is a fancy spinning x-ray system that stitches together multiple images to build a pretty good picture of tissue density, especially bones. They're very useful for emergency departments, because the patient doesn't need to be screened for metal. They're good for other things too, but x-rays have trouble distinguishing soft tissues from each other.
MRI uses a honking big superconductor electromagnet to first line up your water molecules, then bounces radio waves off of those to get a picture of water density in your body. This corresponds to different tissue types, giving a great picture of your insides.
