general-purpose machine gun
A general-purpose machine gun (GPMG) is an air-cooled, usually belt-fed machine gun that can be adapted flexibly to various tactical roles. Technically the medium machine gun. It is chambered for full-power rifle cartridges such as the 7.62×51mm NATO and features quick-change barrel. A GPMG can be configured for mounting to different platforms from bipods and tripods to vehicles, and fortifications.
The very first GPMG ever developed was the MG34.
