Standardizing qualifiers site-wide (where possible)

Posted under General

I've noticed some tags with weird qualifier orders, like Byleth (summer) (fire emblem) (female).
As such, I wanted to propose an informal set of rules ("informal" in that I don't want to create a single rigid rule, just a guideline on how to make qualifiers).

  • Series name should always go last (like we do with Fate)
  • It should follow a hierarchy of forms (For example, Main Character -> Gender -> Alternate outfit).

Following just these two would improve tag discoverability (For example, Byleth (Female) (Summer) (Fire Emblem) would show up in a Byleth (Female) search.)

If people are alright with this, I will start making BURs.

Seems sensible enough!

One guideline I've noted for character tags is the addition of an artist qualifier after the series qualifier, if the character in question is an artist's original character that is explicitly made for a given copyright - as with a few tagging trends, this began with Kemono Friends and remains the most prominent example in this case, though Girls' Frontline adopted it soon after.

I've also seen the qualifiers 'old design' and 'prototype' used, and these are added after the series qualifier too. Those should be self-explanatory.

For OCs, I would either remove the series tag (because they aren't properly from the series), or leave as-is (in compliance with the already-existing OC qualifier guidelines)

For the latter, I don't think I completely agree, but there's no reason to change it for now.

So, the qualifier should be grouped as something like:

Character -> (Physical appearance (Male, Female, Young, Old, Lancer...) -> Outfit) -> (Series -> Artist (if OC))

By the way, if there are two distinct characters that have the same name within a series, and one is from, say, the original game, and the other is from an adaptation (same title), and the characters' name is generic enough to warrant a series qualifier, would the game one be tagged as character_(series)_(game) or character_(game)_(series)?

Wouldn't it replace the series section? Some FE characters have the _(fire_emblem) replaced with the full name of the game they're from (eg. claud_(fire_emblem:_genealogy_of_the_holy_war)). In your case it would be character_(series_(anime)), where series_(anime) is the copytag for the anime adaptation.
