Alias Tux-->Tuxedo

Posted under General

I don't really think Tux is too ambiguous. The only reason that mascot would be named Tux is because tux is short for tuxedo, and penguins are said to look like they're wearing tuxedos.

It's not unique to the Linux penguin, and is one of those lazy animal naming schemes, and is no different than a dog with a big colored patch of fur being named "Spot."

Tux can also be used for the Linux mascot. Tux is too ambiguous to alias.

We could always use Tux_(mascot) to imply that it is the penguin/mascot. Although personally I never even heard or knew of the penguin mascot until I searched Tux on wikipedia.

Besides that I meant that if you search the word Tux it will lead you to the tuxedo tag/posts. That is what it means to alias tags...right?

I do believe more people use Tux then tuxedos.

The word Tux has in common use been used to refer to tuxedos since the 1920's. Nearly all characters named Tux will have some relationship with tuxedos (such as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins mascot Tux)

I think it makes far more sense to alias it to tuxedo going with common usage, and then include a list of things that are also named tux under the Tuxedo tag, than leaving it open.

If the logic is it's too short, then that also means that all usages of the tag then will require qualifiers. I don't see a particular reason that having an empty tux tag with a wiki to link the other usages is any better than including such a list under the tuxedo tag.

Updated

If the name Tux was a artist we can simply use
Tux_(artist).

If it was a character then just Tux_(Character) Or Tux_(name of character from where ever it is from)

Tux is mostly used as a short for Tuxedo and I never heard of any character or author with that name yet. Even if there is I don't think it would be that hard to seperate it from the original use.

If just Tux does not work there is always Tux_(suit).

An example has been just given. Also it's spelt "separate".

That rather defeats the point of making an alias.

Really? I always thought it was "seperate". I never knew it was a "a" in there. Whenever I hear the word I never heard an "ah" sound before. Sorry for that, my spelling and grammer is not the best which is another reason why I request for the alias.

Also Spelt? Thats something new. I've been using Spelled for so long, i didn't think such a thing exist. Thanks.

Exactly.

Grammar :). But yes, it's a very common mistake. The easiest way to get your spelling better is to read a lot of good writing.

It's the more traditional spelling (along with other similar cases, such as "learnt"), and it's generally the preferred one in British English. So what you'd have spelt colorize I'd have got as colourise, so to say.

I see. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. I guess I really got to stop messing around with the computers all day and hit some books. Darn, gotta break them habits.

But back on track. I only suggested Tux_(suit) here since people wanted to be more specific. I don't mind too much but I was hoping for just Tux for simplier and faster tagging/searching.

I'm open to suggestions if someone else got a better idea and just as simple tag that could be alias to Tuxedo.

Personally I think tuxedo could be that tag. It's just 6 letters, and not exactly the most used tag we have. The idea of aliasing is valid, but there have been shown to exist problems which IMHO outweigh the utility of it.

Well If thats the case then I guess I could just leave it as it is and just add the extra 3 letters from now on.

I only request this to due to spelling and thought of how much easier it would be to be able to search and tag. Also due to the fact of how Tux would not send you to tuxedo, was quite a shock when I used it in the wiki.
