in this case, i think since an english term exists, we're inclined to use it? or are we going to separate the toy from the religious ceremony implement?

Should be an implication at least.

If the main design I'm seeing on a GIS is the standard for a ceremonial version I could see splitting those off but if not we may as well alias it.

English terms work if the subjects they represent is completely analogous. The denden daiko is only one type of rattle drum, so it doesn't.
