The Yu-Gi-Oh's Duel Monster names

Posted under Tags

I made this thread to set the rules in stone for this subject.

I know of the old debate between black/dark_magician_girl, and I do know it ended with people agreeing on using the japanese names, but the Dark Magician Girl is still tagged as such. The debate did make an appearance again when I asked to make psy_girl into esper_girl, and once again the decision was to keep the japanese name, but right now both tags are in use.

I believe the duel monsters' tags should use the official english names. I know this isn't the same as with Pokémon, my arguements are that it's kinda more like the Nintendo series tags, how the english names are much more reconizable. Plus, Aside from maybe a dozen of exceptions, every Duel Monster tags are their official english name, including the most popular and recognized one, the Dark Magician Girl.

I don't mind which ones are used, as long as you create aliases.

The hard part is getting an accurate translation/romanization of all the Japanese names.

And as for the official translations, those are not without error either. I remember the case of "Anteatereatingant" (an ant that eats anteaters), and the official German translation was "an anteater that eats ants". And this also happens in the English translation.

Lastly, how do we deal with cards that have a "Name, Title" format, such as "Hiita the Fire Charmer". The tag for her is currently "Hiita".

I do know the official translation is pretty darn weird most of the time, like how they translated Valkyrie into Dark Witch, and Dunamis Valkyria into dunames_dark_witch, but then kept Dark Valkyria as Dark_Valkyria because dark dunames dark witch probably did not sound too catchy. However, they did retcon Harpie's Brother into sky_scout and I do like that move.

In the charmer's cases, I'd prefer that we keep it like it currently is, since Hiita also has her Familiar Possessed and Blazing forms. The others like that are the Princesses, Pikeru and Curran, and the LV monsters, like Silent_Magician, Dark_Mimic, and Horus_the_Black_Flame_Dragon.

Otherwise, you keep the title, like in the case of wynnda_miko_of_the_gusta, which is one of the characters that still have their japanese names.

i agree that all cards should have their official english name if one exists. if one does not exist, then we should go with whatever is the popular translated name for the card (yugioh wiki is usually really good about that), but will then be changed to the english name when said card has been given an official name, while still keeping their original translated name as an alias.

i remember this issue coming up when mesmerizing maneater's were first introduced (little girls that could actually be traps? how could these not get fanart?) and the official names for them becoming Traptrix did lead to some confusion though i think that issue has been fixed.
