Danbooru now supports Ugoira

But as I said in that post I don't like to download files with big size which also takes ages to load on danbooru. Webm conversations are smaller in file size terms and they are also quick to load and doesn't make you to wait so why should go with this new system? It doesn't make any sense. I mean trying to force the rule that we should use this system which not stable at the moment. Isn't there any way to make these files smaller compared to original like our webm conversation and make them to load faster than usual? If you guys achive something like that then it's going to be really awesome achivement for this site for sure like putting link to source section and then danbooru fetches files and then directly converts them into webm files with smaller compression. I don't like the idea how they are rendered via html5 canvas just like pixiv does it *sighs*.

You've been told this already, but Danbooru already BOTH stores the original zip (huge filesize) and creates its Webm counterpart automatically - manually uploading converted webms is unnecessary. Check out "Save as video" link on ugoira posts - that opens converted webm for you. It's currently broken on certain posts, but once it's fixed, separate webm uploads would not be necessary.

I can understand your size/bandwidth concerns, but you should also consider that uploading converted posts breaks duplicate and revision checks - both of those will work with original .zip files. Once automatic conversion is fixed, it's possible to make either a user option or an userscript, to show converted video files automatically instead of ugoira.

The goal is to render the webms by default (assuming you show large files by default) once the conversion process has been better debugged.

Will file_ext, file_url, and md5 still correspond to the zip file?

Just like with the 850px samples for regular non-ugoira images, file_ext file_url and md5 are all for the original file, not the smaller one at large_file_url.

I'm in favor of flagging the old converted gifs that were uploaded. I would prefer to keep just the original files on site.

There are people who downloads those gifs from danbooru and shares them in their blog, tumblr or any other personal image/content sharing site so I don't think we should touch animated gifs in the first place. After all most of people are doesn't know how to make those gifs. However I don't think it's necessary to upload animated gifs anymore if it's a ugoira work either. So I vote down to your suggestion sorry.

I agree with flagging the webm/gifs, preferably only for ones where the native ugoira has been uploaded and parented already.

They can share the webms that Danbooru automatically provides, as has been mentioned several times now.

If it has to be a gif specifically, they can use one of the several ugoira->gif converters out there, such as this. "most of people are doesn't know how to make those gifs" doesn't work when tools like the one I linked exist - it's as simple as putting a url in a text field, checking off "GIF", and pressing submit. Anyone can do this without any kind of technical know-how.

That's not an argument because first: they can use webm now, second: old gifs will still be here (only with deleted status, which de facto means nothing right now), third: it's really not a danbooru business what people will do with downloaded picture/animations and what not.
If there is an argument against flagging and deleting previous versions then it's the same reason why we do not delete earlier posted but eventually worse version of any pictures: because we acknowledge and appreciate uploader's effort who presumably did the best what he could in that moment. It's not his fault that later new, better version was found/done. And because it's not his fault then it's better not to "punish" him by deleting his posts.

I'm not happy about seeing my webms flagged while they're superior to the auto-generated ones. At least some of us tried to keep compression to a minimum. More than half of the webms with ugoira parents don't have a working auto-webm link for the ugoira, but of those that do, the current best example is post #1807402 (webm) / post #1830322 (ugoira). The auto-generated webm is less than one-fifth the size of the manual one and as a result, noticeably ruins the noise effect.

There's one thing that's been bugging me for quite some time now - the ugoira tag. Shouldn't it be used only on the actual ugoira-format images, but not on converted ones? Otherwise, searching for "real" ugoiras turns into ugoira -webm -animated_gif -animated_png whatever_else. Maybe there should be some tag like converted to distinguish them instead.

There are currently more converted images than there is original - compare ugoira -webm -animated_gif -animated_png to ugoira ~webm ~animated_gif ~animated_png.

Hi, I'd like to know.
I want to upload this but I have no idea if that works or no.
Is it possible to upload it directly like with Pixiv now or it has to be converted?

That's an mp4 video file. Right now the only video format Danbooru supports is webm.
