Policy about official/promotional art

Posted under General

I have a quick question, since there are some posts flagged that are a boxart and official art.
Like post #457249 which is the boxart of Super Mario Galaxy (without the text, though).
Other example are post #2474351, that I've approved, simply because it is a good picture. It's also definitely not off-topic.
Other examples are too find under the first and second page under status:flagged official_art right now (except that DoA girl at page two, I don't mean that, but mostly the Super Mario posts.

What was your question again? I didn't see a question in your OP.

If they should be approved or not if they are flagged for the reason that they are promotional art or box art. Because if there is no policy about those kind of posts, the flags are invalid.

IMHO I'd say both of the above posts are off-topic. If they were animified, that would be a different story.

Besides that, this feels like a rehash of topic #13037, which was locked by albert with his final say being...

I don't see a problem with the current status. I look at one of the properties in question here like overwatch and the majority of it is not objectionable. That Doom image. Not objectionable. The real problem isn't Western art. It's low quality art in general. That's what we should be focusing on.

It's important not to get hung up on one or two exceptions that crop up from time to time. Perfect is the enemy of good enough.

With regards to flagging, if you think something doesn't belong on this site then flag it. You're limited to 10 a day so use it wisely.

So people are free to flag a post if they feel like it doesn't belong on the site, just as someone is free to reapprove it if they feel like it does...

Mario is more or less a character that already is anime-fied.
And I don't think that this is the same, because the other topic was about how Western art should be treated.
Here, it is about anime-related (i.e. on-topic) art that is official/promotional art. So these cases aren't really the same.

There's two things you missed in my post...

  • I used IMHO, i.e. in my humble opinion, as I was stating my opinion.
  • The other thread does apply, since the language of that post I quoted basically states that people are free to flag ANY post if they feel it doesn't belong on this site.

While I'll accept that the flagger is exercising their rights, and reasonably so, I decided to approve the images on the basis of them being on topic, going by native source + 3d/videogame art, while not being screencaps and also well composed content from the creators of said brand/franchise.

If there were more glaring mistakes or if the artwork was dressed with the lettering on the box, I'd have refused, just as I have with the remaining flagged pics, which in post #2481313 and the others has the official text on it, and in the cases of post #2472074 and post #2027599 have a lot of artifacting.
