clean up pipe, pipes

Posted under Tags

About these tags:

The wikis basically say that pipe is for smoking while pipes is for plumbing. The wiki of holding_pipe does not explain which kind of pipe, but implies pipe and links to it on the wiki (which would be about the smoking pipe, right?).

Anyway, several posts tagged pipe and/or holding_pipe have the either the smoking pipe or the tube... These have the tube: post #968285, post #3486713, post #4258185, post #4241362 and so on.

Maybe we could use names like this:

+1, but maybe aliasing pipe_(smoking) to smoking_pipe and pipe_(plumbing) to plumbing_pipe could be better?

This reminds me of topic #15031. It was basically about using computer_keyboard or keyboard_(computer).

It looks like we usually use tags with parentheses for disambiguation. We have star_(symbol) and star_(sky), even though we could have used something like star_symbol and sky_star.

But anyway, pipe and pipes are currently kind of a mess, so whatever option would be an improvement, I think.

Should note that the lead pipe tag is the tag used for the individual piece of piping being carried as an improvised weapon.

For pipes a part of system it might be worthwhile changing the name to piping.

An alternative to smoking pipe could be tobacco pipe.

It'd probably be worthwhile to separate fake tobacco/smoking pipes from the real ones as well and give them their own tag like fake_tobacco_pipe or fake_smoking_pipe.

There are some posts under pipes that im not sure really qualify as plumbing. post #211726, post #1153114.

There was also an argument that pipe can be used for blowing bubbles rather than smoking. Id argue that its still a smoking pipe but that was brought up. +1 on that ☺.

I swear this was discussed previously but now I cant find the topic.

Again, is post #211726 really plumbing? Also ducts and valves are also "plumbing".

plumbing_pipes, maybe? Or liquid_pipes?

Speaking of, those dokan concrete/ceramic pipes prolly deserve a tag of their own too. Kinda distinctive and appear quite often in Japanese playgrounds (in art, think they are far less common now), especially the older-styled ones meant to evoke nostalgia (in art).

They do, it's called culvert. Though one of the images under that tag is something else.

The odd one out is an actual "culvert" though. Technically the culvert is an architecture structure (basically a channel/tunnel that allows water to flow from one side to another), which may be made from pipes (though not always). Take the pipe out, and the pipe is no longer a culvert.

Hmm, weird that the majority of the posts are the huge pipe, then.

BUR #5639 has been rejected.

create alias pipe -> tobacco_pipe
create alias holding_pipe -> holding_tobacco_pipe
create alias pipes -> pipe_(plumbing)

"smoking pipe" on its own is a bit ambiguous as it could refer to the action of smoking the pipe. Yes, the alias does help, but pipes are seldom called smoking pipes, and pipe (smoking) wouldn't be great either. I propose we go with "tobacco pipe" to match the Wikipedia page; it's what most if not all smoking pipes are, including kiseru (that long Japanese tobacco pipe).

Pipes used for non-tobacco substances like water or spoon pipes for cannabis should be tagged separately like bongs and hookah pipes. The intended purpose of the pipes in all the art it's tagged in is mainly tobacco.
