Regarding types of wire fences

Posted under Tags

Recently I've come across wire fence, which has quite a few posts that could use chain-link fence instead. However, this tag seems to have been created for a specific design that's not arranged in the chain-link pattern (i.e. post #1547254, post #3749885).
Since I do think users searching for chain-link fence want the traditional argyle pattern, should these two be gardened into fence, or should a less ambiguous tag be created?

I believe a wire fence -> chain-link fence alias is mandatory though to hopefully solve these occasional wire fence mistags.

Wire fencing comes in there major types. Welded wire fencing (post #3864272, possibly woven though), woven wire fencing, and chain-link fencing (post #1827595). As you describe, at a distance the visual difference is that welded wire/woven wire fencing forms squares or rectangle shapes, while chain-link forms diamond shapes. Welded wire would have a more rigid appearance versus woven wire where the wires are not welded together but simply tied together.

Side note: For post #2559798 currently tagged wire fence, it probably would be best to call that a "rope_fence."

Well, we should create a "welded_wire_fence" tag, I think that's necessary. But given the possibly difficult distinction at a distance, "woven_wire_fence" would probably be more harm than good in terms of mistagging.

On a somewhat related note, these types of fences are distinct in their appearance but have no specific tag aside from fence. I was thinking something along the lines of "welded_fence" since they all appear to be welded together.
If we proceed with both of these, I can add some clause like "should be used when the fence rails are thin, wire-like in size" to the "welded_wire_fence" wiki to avoid conflict with "welded_fence".

About wire fence, though. If the chain-link fence mistags are fixed and the others moved to "welded_wire_fence", would it be fine if wire fence just vanished?
