deprecating Dragon bodypart tags

Posted under Tags

BUR #16134 has been rejected.

deprecate dragon_horns
deprecate dragon_tail
deprecate dragon_wings
deprecate dragon_ears

these don't actually tag a particular concept and more are just canon tags, mostly since, as dragons are a fictional creature from hundreds of years ago based on reptiles, don't have any sort of consistent design

in fact a lot of bodypart tags like this could likely be gotten rid of under the same logic but i understand this is likely to be a controversial precedent to set so we'll start with this to see how it fairs

These tags currently function as an umbrella for dragon-like body parts, because there's no tags for the individual subtypes (think dragon antlers vs "scaly" dragon horns, or scaly pointy ears vs scaly head fins). They cannot be deprecated if we don't have tags for the specific subtypes, because it would mean just nuking this kind of information without offering an alternative.

TBH even if we had subtype tags I'd probably argue for keeping the umbrella tags.

BUR #41582 has been rejected.

deprecate dragon_horns

Not getting into the other proposed deprecations in this topic, but focusing in on just this one. Eastern dragon horns at least actually have a slightly consistent design (since eastern dragons themselves have a consistent design), but this is definitely not the case for western dragons. This tag is basically equivalent to ~dragon_boy ~dragon_girl horns. If we deprecated oni horns in topic #25488 for having two inconsistent designs, then dragon horns should certainly go having a whole hodgepodge of designs underneath.

What are those designs though? Per the oni horns topic you linked, the two main taggable horns that were named had to receive their own tags before the BUR could be approved, so you need to similarly point out what they are so that alternatives can be provided (whether they exist as tags or not already being a related issue).

Eastern dragon horns is the easiest one to list first (and currently undertagged). Has some overlap with antlers.

Seeing some low horns and curled horns as well going through the tag.

I guess my other question is... do we really need to always tag the specific horn design? Is horns not enough? Are people looking for horned anime girls care that much about how the horns exactly spike up outside of if they fall into the broad cow girl dragon girl demon girl or troll camps? Do we need tags for every sort of zigzag design they can make?

As long as the most common horn variants are represented in the list, it should be good enough, and people who want more narrowed horn tags can argue elsewhere for that.
