Rename Nissin's cup noodle + instant noodles tags

Posted under Tags

BUR #16393 has been rejected.

category cup_noodle -> general
rename cup_noodle -> nissin_cup_noodle
create implication nissin_cup_noodle -> cup_ramen
create implication instant_noodles -> instant_ramen

The tag for Nissin cup noodle is currently simply tagged as "Cup Noodle", which is often mistagged with generic cup noodles alias for other cup ramen brands, so I think it should be renamed to separate it from other cup noodle tags.

Also, I added implication to the generic cup ramen tag since it was a cup noodle brand itself.

In addition, I would like to add "instant noodles" alias to instant ramen, since the aforementioned cup ramen tag did have "cup noodles" alias, and it is also popularly referred to as "instant noodles" in several countries. So I would like to have it added for consistency.

I would've assumed that the reason why Cup Noodle was a copytag was because of those Cup Noodle animated commercials, but we already have a tag for that campaign (though even there the original characters from that campaign don't seem to be present), and even then, I think the general practice is to tag Nissin for those original characters.

What about their official arts from collaborations? Wouldn't it be weird to not feature Cup Noodle in the copyright section? It's an artwork copyrighted under the brand.

Petty sure it belongs to their respective character copyright, since these character were not created to promote the brand itself at the first place.

I just noticed that the tag for Nissin Cup Noodle is changed into general category, yet it's not renamed to avoid confusion, is there any explaination why it is not approved?

The category change stems from the fact that up until February earlier this year, the Cup Noodle tag was in the general category, until one user manually changed it to the copyright category. This has been corrected, and probably should have been corrected before this BUR even existed.

BUR #21862 has been approved by @nonamethanks.

create alias cup_noodle -> nissin_cup_noodle
remove alias cup_noodle -> nissin_cup_noodle
create alias nissin_cup_noodles -> nissin_cup_noodle

Given that the original BUR had broad enough support, aside from potentially just missing it in the shuffle, I suspect that part of the reason why it didn't get approved was because of it tried to do too much at once.

So let's parcel this out, by having a BUR just for renaming the Cup Noodle tag to include the Nissin name, because TrueKringe is right that the tag is often mistagged on Cup Ramen posts, unhelped by the "Cup Noodles" alias that tag has, meaning that an one-letter spelling difference is between you tagging correctly or not (because I imagine most folks don't know that Cup Noodle is how it is called in Japan, as Nissin consistently refers to it as Cup Noodles in Western markets).

Do we really have 400+ posts of that specific brand's cup ramen? Otherwise it needs a massive cleanup.

It actually used to be much less (so much use that it allowed the last BUR to use 'rename'). I had found that many posts which had Nissin's Cup Noodle were not tagged and only had the Cup Ramen tag, whether they be exact manifestations of Cup Noodle or parodies which aped the style of Cup Noodle's famous packaging. If there's any tag that needs a massive cleanup, it's Cup Ramen (and Instant Ramen, since people also mistag it). I don't think it's that surprising to have that many posts, given that Cup Noodle is literally the world's most famous cup ramen brand.

Actually, let me specify a major problem with the instant ramen tag. It's forced to pull double-duty on two specific things despite the fact that it sounds like it'd be an overarching tag that would include cup ramen in it. It's a tag that is supposed to be used for either: a) instant ramen packs, the non-cup square/rectangular plastic packaging that you prepare in a bowl or a pot, which isn't exclusive to ramen either; b) the precooked block of noodles within either the pack or the cup/bowl.

Anyone would recognize that both of these should probably get their own tags (spitballing names, instant_noodle_pack and instant_noodle_block), while instant ramen gets implicated into instant noodles, which becomes an overarching tag including not just instant ramen (and in turn, cup ramen and all the brands we tag), but also instant udon and instant soba. Actually, one has to wonder whether we should turn cup ramen into a cup_noodles/instant_noodle_cup (and maybe instant_noodle_bowl) tag to account for the udon and soba tagged with it.

BUR #22208 has been rejected.

create implication instant_ramen -> instant_noodles
create implication instant_udon -> instant_noodles
create implication instant_soba -> instant_noodles
remove alias cup_noodles -> cup_ramen
create alias cup_ramen -> instant_cup_noodles
rename pack_noodles -> instant_pack_noodles
rename raou_(cup_ramen) -> nissin_raoh

As TrueKringe noted in his original BUR, "instant noodles" is a common way for instant ramen to be referred to as internationally, but he just proposed it as an implication to instant ramen, when that would be ignoring instant udon and instant soba. That's why I want to reverse his proposal and suggest that we have an overarching instant noodles tag covering ramen, udon and soba, parallel to the same being the case for the non-instant variants (instant ramen's current wiki can be later updated to be instant noodles' wiki).

In turn, because the cup ramen tag is used for instant udon and soba as well, it makes sense to reverse its alias and have the main tag be cup noodles. Since the Nissin brand of the same name has been disambiguated, doing the same for generic cup noodles would make sense, following with instant noodles. After this BUR gets approved, I'll have a BUR implying the instant cup and pack noodles, as well as instant noodle block, to instant noodles.
