Sonic boom deprecation/alias

Posted under Tags

BUR #19731 has been approved by @evazion.

deprecate sonic_boom
create alias sonic_boom_(game) -> sonic_boom_(series)

Since sonic_boom is ambiguous between the sound generated by supersonic flight and the Sonic the Hedgehog thing, it should be deprecated.

On a related note, sonic_boom_(game) is too restrictive, as there's not one but four Sonic Boom games (not to mention the TV series and the comics). Even the wiki seems to agree that sonic_boom_(series) is a more accurate tag name.

I'm fairly doubtful that supersonic and super_sonic would be confused for each other; "supersonic" has always been just one word, while "Super Sonic" has always been two. But if that's really a point of contention, then supersonic_speed should suffice. I considered supersonic_flight, but I can easily imagine Sonic or some other speedy character breaking the sound barrier while running rather than flying. Again, however, I think supersonic is already enough.

The discussion of what to do with sonic boom was inconclusive. Also sonic boom (speed) seems like a poor qualifier. And frankly, every time a tag is deprecated, it usually falls on me to clean it up. Which is time consuming because I have to figure out where to move all the remaining posts, and it usually leads to adjacent tags that need to be cleaned up too. In this case, we have sonic boom (speed), supersonic, and shockwave, which need to be either merged or defined with a clear distinction between them all.

sonic_boom_(speed) is a poor name for the tag, yes. I'm not really sure why it was created, especially when this thread mentioned sonic_boom_(speed) exactly 0 times. If we're going with sonic_boom_(qualifier) instead of supersonic, then it should be sonic_boom_(phenomenon). I'll submit a rename BUR.

shockwave, while related, would benefit from a seperate thread. From a cursory glance, it seems to be both being used as a catch-all for actual shock waves and occasionally used incorrectly for other things that range from understandable to stupid.

I had plans to do this one myself, which is why the auto-rejection annoyed me enough that I bumped the thread. A similar thorn in my side is the personification rework BUR in topic #24985, but I'm waiting for @nonamethanks on that one since he seemed just as invested in fixing those tags as I am.

Given the fact that it was made by a random member-level user who doesn't appear to have engaged with this thread at all, they presumably just independently realized the tag was ambiguous and made that tag themselves.

That makes more sense, yeah.

Do you have any opinion on the proposed sonic_boom_(phenomenon)?

I agree with renaming the tag, but (phenomenon) feels like an even-worse choice for a qualifier. I don't see why we can't stick with the earlier-suggested supersonic_speed, or even something like supersonic_boom, if we want to emphasize the fact that it's referring to the specific shockwave made at such speeds.

BUR #20863 has been rejected.

rename sonic_boom_(speed) -> supersonic_boom

Agreed. supersonic_boom is good because it emphasises the shockwave while not being ambiguous like sonic_boom, and there's no ugly qualifier.
