Horror - Theme, Scare Factor, Usefulness?

Posted under Tags

As Halloween draws upon us I've recently had time to think about the Horror_(theme) tag and have issues with the way it is currently being used.

Currently the wiki states:
"Unsettling images that provoke fear, uneasiness and dread from the viewer. If a character seems to feel this way but the image as a whole is not creepy to the viewer, then use horrified instead."

Horror as a theme in most circumstances tends to encompass a lot of tropes and creatures. Werewolves, skulls, haunted mansions filled with ghosts. The subject might not scare you but you wouldn't say that a movie about Dracula isn't a horror film just because traditional vampires are cheesy. I don't understand why our tag doesn't have this same broad strokes. There are 22k images for ghost right now but if I search the tag I get a ton of Youmu and Genshin art, why wouldn't the public-domain traditional ghostly apparitions go in the horror_(theme) tag for filtering regardless of if it is actually scary to the viewer? Same with zombie or werewolf I don't want to see canon-tagged large breasted girls I want to see the monsters and creatures.

I was ready to leave my opinion at that and ask for a re-name to better state wiki-goal...

But, I actually now am questioning if such a tag is even necessary with current wiki. Body Horror exists for most of the bloody and warped girls on the front page and the whole tag is otherwise subjective, able to be filled by more specific tags like monster.

On the front page right now there are multiple Backrooms posts like post #6768831 or post #6770241 I personally don't find these scary, they don't fill me with anymore dread than a sheet ghost. Fear seems hard to qualify as everyone is afraid of different things

Do any of these actually fill you with dread or uneasiness? What are good ways to fix the tag if you want it to actually be for inflicting the fear in the viewer?
