Why is "tengen_toppa_gurren-lagann" hyphenated?

The logo and English sites don't have it, so why?

ann does list the hyphenated version as an alternate spelling, but so is the "Tengen Toppa" part--they just call it "Gurren Lagann (TV)". For romanized Japanese, both ways are listed:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Japanese)
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (Japanese)

The hyphenated version appears to come from the cancelled ADV version:
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (Cancelled ADV Release) (DVD 1) 2008-08-26

So if we were going to change it, which title would be comfortable? Admittedly I haven't looked it up on any other English sites so that's all I have to go on.

The logo I was referencing was at the English Wikipedia's article, though I now supposing it's a localized one.

I'm supposing the hyphen notion was reinforced by the URLs, a curse that continues to befall Square Enix, in fact.

In that case, it sounds like a new alias is in order, tengen_toppa_gurren-lagann -> tengen_toppa_gurren_lagaan. Thoughts?

I see no reason to not at least create an alias, personally.

I'll alias to hyphenless and hopefully I'll be able to locate all the related tags and wikis... expect the job tasks to take awhile to run though.

What to do about the mecha though? I want to keep the gurren_lagann -> full title alias but that leaves us with gurren-lagann as the mech.

Well, on second thought there's no reason it can't be aliased to gurren_lagann_(mecha), which I'll do if there are no objections.

Heck, that's how it is for the Big O, so no complaints here.

I think the name of the mecha should stay hyphenated because it's a combining of the mechas Gurren and Lagann, though. In the same manner that a marriage between Joe Smith and Jane Doe might result in a couple with the surname Smith-Doe.

Ah, didn't know about that. I've only seen part of the first episode (dammit, Manga, why are your ads so badly 'paced'?).

I thought about that, and it is valid. I guess I just wasn't sure if it was official. Well, if that even matters or can be determined in this case.

Whether or not we go the hyphenated route, I think we should aim for consistency between the tag for the anime and the tag for the mecha.

Agh, I just checked on my DVDs and the subs don't hyphenate "Gurren Lagann" in the title or when referring to the mecha so I guess I was wrong.
