HSR The Dahlia name

To be fair, this is actually a retake on my previous two BURs at solving this issue (forum #394322 and forum #394323) back when her drip marketing came out. The issue back then was that she was still referred to by her real name: Constance, because that's what she was known as from her Myriad Celestia Trailer and the 2.1 Penacony story. "The Dahlia" was simply the title she took up when she was part of the Ever-Flame Mansion. Thus, the fanbase knew her as such.

Fast forward 2 months later, and the fanbase had swung to using her title because that's her on-screen name as a playable, and it shows in her fanarts and the hastags being applied. I've always been in favor of aliasing her real name to her screen name (and we have precedent for that: Pela doesn't go by her full "Pelageya Sergeyevna" name except in rare bits in the 1.0 story).

Of course, like what was said in forum #394340, we were never consistent with our chartags for HSR, as several charas like Bronya Rand and Serval Landau can attest. Their names didn't change, they only go by their given names because it's less hassle for the system.

That's not a strict rule, nor has it ever been one. Danbooru tags don't need to match exactly what it is in-game; only what makes sense or what's the common name. Some characters use their full name because it's available even though arguably last names are as important as Genshin Impact last names (they aren't which is why they aren't used).

Titles aren't meant to be used as proper names. We use the playable name for all characters because that's what their name is in the first place. Constance's name isn't "Dahlia", that's her title. We don't alias titles to any of the playable characters. It's not that we're "stopping"; like I said, her name was never changed in the first place.

You can't quote me only halfway to try and make a point.

Both are pointless. Her name was never changed, Dahlia is a title, leave it as a factoid in the wiki. This should only be revisited after story text is out to figure out what she'll be more commonly referred to as which may also be the basis for what most artists will be calling her, up to and including her Pixiv tag.

One half of my response to downvoting the initial alias was to wait first for more materials and/or story text to be released before deciding whether or not to do this instead of relying solely on the drip marketing, if it ever meant that we would have to pointlessly shuffle the alias around again, which is what already happened to Cyrene to the point of needing to retire both old names: topic #33866. It was in jumping-the-gun territory that was way too early to consider at the time.

The other half, which builds on that first half, is that it's not conventional to use "titles" as names. The only case where we do this is if the code name is more frequently used than the proper name, which then the real name could be a utility alias assuming that's how most official materials are written and how they are most commonly referred to. Now that we're on the day of the character being released as a playable, it's been made apparent enough that they intend to be using "The Dahlia" over "Constance", so the alias has more weight to going through now than back then.

Of course, like what was said in forum #394340, we were never consistent with our chartags for HSR, as several charas like Bronya Rand and Serval Landau can attest. Their names didn't change, they only go by their given names because it's less hassle for the system.

Wrong; it's because no one has done anything about them. Bronya Rand should be Bronya (Honkai: Star Rail) because most characters in Honkai: Star Rail have qualifiers. The same goes for any other character that's missing a qualifier right now.

The point of mentioning this is regarding someone who said that we "use the playable character name for every other playable character". This can't be true when the characters without qualifiers using their full names do not appear like that in-game or on any promotional materials. For it to be true, they have to be qualified with their full names as utility aliases, as it is for Genshin Impact and Blue Archive. Asterisk on Jing Yuan who should be Jing Yuan (Honkai: Star Rail).

Similarly, extending to other copyrights, there are some cases where pretzeling to make the Danbooru tags represent an actual structure or name from official materials is a worse option. This was a general statement not specific to the character being talked about. Not all tags need to match 1:1; best fit and consistency need to also be considered.

Operative phrase:

Titles aren't meant to be used as proper names. We use the playable name for all characters because that's what their name is in the first place.

Now that we have an exception to this precedent, as the code name is being surfaced more than the real name, this alias makes sense now. It didn't back then. It's a simple line of reasoning to avoid headaches shuffling aliases ahead of the curve.

Small update: now that the update is out, can confirm that both the promotional media, game itself and fan artists are chosing to move forward with "(The) Dahlia" as both title and name, so the alias makes sense to do now.
