Around 2020, judging by wiki edit history, someone decided that +_+ should be only for temporary "eyes lit up", and that characters with pupils inherently that shape or similar (the traditional example being Nia Teppelin) should use something else, such as star-shaped pupils, cross-shaped pupils, or flower-shaped pupils. Before this point, it seems +_+ covered both cases.
This distinction is widely disregarded. To the extent that the wiki for one such character, Koyuki (Blue Archive), formerly used +_+ to describe her eyes instead of star-shaped. These tags either need more gardening or we should go back to using +_+ for both. To be frank, +_+ is a lot shorter and arguably more intuitive: many people when they read "star-shaped" immediately think of five-pointed stars and not four-pointed ones.
