๐ŸŽ‰ Happy 20th Birthday to Danbooru! ๐ŸŽ‰
Danbooru

A quick question I hope isn't asked too much.

Posted under General

I found this place while just searching the net, and I've got to say, it's a really nice place. I've read the rules over and everything, so I won't ask for an invite or anything stupid like that, and I've read the suggestions on how to get accepted. Just curious though, it seems a lot easier for an artist to get accepted than for a poor talentless slob like myself, so I thought I'd ask for a more detailed explanation of what I can do to contribute. I figured that there must be hundreds of you on the site who can't draw, and I was wondering if they could give me any advice as to how to contribute without said talents. Thank you in advance to anyone who read this post, whether they respond or not. Look forward to working with all of you.

Edit: I've gone to work on the wiki, filling in what I know from games and anime, etc. But I'm still looking for other ways to help out. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why do you say this? *Generally* posting your own art is frowned upon (though not always), and I'm pretty sure the number of contributing artists as members here is just about nil.

So you're on equal footing with everyone else.

Ah, glad to hear that then. I had been under the impression that the artists themselves would post their work, in addition to what the others could find that hadn't been posted. Sorry I got the wrong impression. Thanks for filling me in, though.

Nope, just whatever we find. As just about all of the artists are Japanese living in Japan, it's unlikely they'd be danbooru members.

I'd have to agree, after wading through a ton of Japanese pages today with little to no idea what I was clicking today. But I've found a few more ways to contribute, at least, and I suppose I had to learn japanese sometime anyway.

If you know what sites to look for (artists of sourced pics are always a good place to start), I've found it's USUALLY not hard to figure out where the image gallery is, even without any knowledge of Japanese. Anothering thing to try is looking up an anime or game on Wikipedia, where the Japanese text for characters' names is often listed somewhere. Then plug the name of a character you're looking for into Google Image.

Yes, those who can read Japanese still have an edge in finding good fanart, but there's plenty that us English-only people can do as well. I probably uploaded 500+ pics in the previous incarnation of Danbooru, mostly found using Google Image. They're no longer credited to me since account information wasn't retained when the site was revived, but oh well. Just trust me, the pics are out there. :D

When I said people with good Japanese language skills have some degree of an edge, I was thinking in the context of adding notes for translation, actually; I didn't make that clear, though.

Oh, okay.

Yeah, that would kind of go without saying. The few note translations I've done (which, again, were done in Danbooru's previous incarnation) were copy-pastes of translations I found elsewhere. I'm not dumb enough to stick a Babelfish translation note here.
