Difference between "garbage" and "junk"

How do we differentiate between garbage and junk?

I always imagined that garbage was thing like garbage bags, food stuff, and other waste while junk was electronic, mechanical, and the like.

I was thinking along the same lines. And then there's trash too.

Thrash is just stuff that should be thrown out, like used tissues, empty boxes.
