If we're going to alias this, I'd say the alias should be watch -> wristwatch and wrist_watch -> wristwatch. Since if it is just left at watch, it could cause some confusion with pocket_watch, which is a watch. Not all watches have to be the wrist type, just that is the type people most commonly refer to.
If that's the case then should wristwatch and pocket watch implicate watch?
It depends on which direction we go. One route we can consider pocket watches and wristwatches completely separate and thus should not be put together, and thus watch isn't really needed. Alternatively we could go the route that we need a tag for watches (worn clocks), implicate both wristwatch and pocket watch to it.
The key point is if there is a need for a watch -pocket_watch -wristwatch search. If nothing is ever going to come up from such a search, then it's not really needed to have a watch tag superior to the pocket watch and wristwatch tags. We could then say that since the two look nothing a like, that we can simply make due with two completely independent tags from each other.
I don't think we'll need watch outside of those two.
So I aliased watch -> wristwatch and wrist_watch -> wristwatch as you initially suggested.
Edit: actually, not putting this through yet. There are a bunch of clocks and pocket_watch images tagged watch right now. touhou watch would probably be a good place to start.
I started sorting them but it'd take too long to keep at it for the moment. If someone wouldn't mind cleaning it up before I alias, I'd appreciate it.
Updated
Of the 380 images tagged watch, 111 contain pocket watches, but only 26 are tagged as such.
While it could be just 1 person who tags pocket watches with watch, I'm guessing many people do. So I think a watch -> wristwatch alias is a bad idea.
edit: I moved everything from watch to the more specific tags, so there's nothing left there at the moment.

why is no longer a general tag?

That's fine. Having the note in the wiki pointing to the various types is a good idea.
Question I have the wiki for watch says that it refers to wrist_watches, but wrist watches are their own tag now.
Can we have watch be the general term, since it links to all the other types of watches, and I could clean up watch to fit more of a general description. If this is granted, the types of watches need to be implicated to watch.
Previous messages seem to tell that watch should be empty to avoid mistagging between wrist_watch and pocket_watch. The wiki would need to reflect that.

Wouldn't clock be the best option for general tag? It would have these implications:
And, as an additional step, we could have this alias, because the word watch also encompasses multiple types of timepieces, and we most certainly don't need two umbrella tags like that.

Nothing against the first four, but the latter three I'm definitely against. I would much rather have distinct watches and clocks instead of one grey mess.

No.
Watches and clocks are much too visually distinct (as used in everyday speech) to put together. But I can do:
create implication clockshow -> clock
create implication grandfather clock -> clock
create implication pocket_watch -> watch
create implication stopwatch -> watch
create implication wristwatch -> watch
These already existed:
create implication alarm_clock -> clock
create implication clock_tower -> clock

I see you went ahead and did these implications. Look good to me.
