personality_swap vs. body_swap

Posted under General

I was having a look at post #808956, which is a gigantic "whose body is whose!?" post, but isn't tagged as such. So I looked around, and I noticed we have both personality_swap (which has a wiki article) and body_swap (which doesn't, and has a quarter of the posts - not that there's much of any). We should probably alias one to the other, since everything in body_swap seems to apply to the description in personality_swap. I don't really care which, but it seems that since personality_swap has more posts and a wiki...

body_swap is like a special case of personality_swap where not only the personality, but the memories, too, are swapped.

Pictures with body_swap usually depict the time shortly after the swap, showing their reactions.
The tag is often meta information (like siblings), information that can't be deduced from the picture alone.
If the tag isn't included as is, an explanation in form of a comment would be needed to clarify the content of the picture.

Example:
post #792569
"Well, from what I see, I assume they slept together",
"Oh body swap tag, I see."

Since revision 7 (06/08/2009 10:22 by RaisingK, newest one), " (or bodies) " is included, which suggests
personality_swap -can be-> body_swap =
body_swap -manually implicates-> personality_swap

Personally, I'd keep them separate; or at least keep the body_swap tag, though I didn't even know it existed until today.

It you wanted to get technical, personality and body swap wouldn't necessarily be the same. Though this is pertaining to a generally non-taggable difference. A body swap is swapping of the minds between two characters, a personality swap isn't necessarily a complete swapping of the minds, but a swapping of a trait, such as a shyness or aggressiveness.

It would probably I guess make the most sense to have the alias being body_swap -> personality_swap, since personality could be taken to be the entire swapping of the mind or simply a swapping of an individual personality trait.

Additionally though, if it was felt that images it which it is clearly indicated that the characters' minds have been swapped (such as in post #295798), we could also retain the body_swap tag and have it implicate personality_swap.

Digging this up no alias seems to be in place; I just tried it on post #1318431

If they are to stay (or be re-) aliased together, I'd rather see the more common term body_swap be used. Going by trait vs consciousness swapping as in sgcdonmai's definitions, body swap seems vastly the more common case on danbooru posts.

And what's the reasoning behind switch over swap? Switch seems like an awkward wording to me.

Perhaps the body_swap tag was de-aliased when personality_swap was aliased to personality_switch? Though I'm not finding anything in a forum search on when we discussed that alias (the history for personality_switch wiki was made Dec 8th by jxh, so the alias was made that day).

Swap was changed to switch from my understanding because "swap" implies that it is between two individuals, while "switch" broadens the meaning by allowing for shuffling amongst multiple people (example: post #295798).

As far as naming goes, as I mentioned before "personality" could be much broader and so would be more accurate and encompassing than using "body."

I imagine the we'll want to restore this and create aliases:

create alias body_swap -> personality_switch
create alias body_switch -> personality_switch
