Image Discussion - Origins Pool

Posted under General

Hi. As suggested by other members, I created the Origins pool (pool #4068) a while ago, and I have a question. Should there be a clear separation of verbal memes/trends (which aren't referenced in pictures and the such but are referenced in comments and the like) and visual memes/trends? Or should I just change the pool description to include verbal memes?

Examples of images that have been added to the pool due to proficient referencing in comments:

EDIT: I'd like to have this thread become open to general discussion regarding the images in the pool, including possible additions, removals, and replacements.

I think it should be fine to include both. Seconding what jjj14 said. "A Cat is Fine" and other verbal memes of its caliber are definitely poolworthy, but I can't say anything about the other two since I don't know about them.

What of post #1013973? I once added it to the Origins pool, then removed it again because yandere_trance is too much like can't_be_this_cute and such, and the pool description seems to exclude such visual memes. Still, we do have posts like post #494419 in the pool, and gununu is a visual meme too.

Seems to me that post #1013973 and post #494419 should either both be in, or neither.

If anything, an actual screencap would be a better candidate for the pool.

I feel that the yandere_trance meme shouldn't be in the Origins pool because it's really just a parody of that specific scene, much like can't_be_this_cute.

Also, I must have missed the gununu one. I'll remove it from the pool.

Screencaps aren't supposed to be in the pool at all. The origins pool is supposed to be for original/fanmade stuff.

I disagree. I think the source of any popular meme would belong.

I wonder why post #25287 and post #557808 are there.

As far as I know, those two don't belong. It's difficult to pinpoint that origin of Ex-Rumia, and likely the user selected one of the oldest posts of ex-rumia on Danbooru to insert in the pool. I think it's more likely chado made this popular with an early doujin, but it's hard to say.

buuwa, and many others, made many posts of Seme-Wriggle way before I posted post #557808. This one isn't the launching point of the meme.

While I admit the EX-Rumia was kind of a guess, according to the Seme-Wriggle pool, buuwa was the one who started up the trend, and looking at what's been posted of his work, that image was the first one and as such, I added it.

However, if I'm wrong, don't hesitate to do something about it. I welcome anyone to remove/replace images from the pool that they feel aren't suited for it or aren't the actual origin of the trend.

I'd rather not include memes that are just character swaps of the original, like can't_be_this_cute, just_as_planned, etc. Most of them aren't used in contexts other than parodies of the original image.

There's a pretty good reason for that. Buuwa had posted lots of Seme-Wriggle, as you can see searching under this artist:

Most I consider not worth posting on Danbooru, as did all other uploaders, so that group shot ended up being one of the first actually posted here. Basically, I'd just consider this a gradual buildup to this idea, not any one image suddenly launching it.

the origin for post #458132 which is probably "I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of xxxx" was Star Trek series’s episodes being parodied and textually rewritten in funny dialogues. iirc, it was on Feb of 2005 that the author (forgot who) posted a parody.

If my memory cans till recall it, the lines somehow go like this.

Guy: But I was the one who told you that puzzle in the first place.
Kirk: Sorry, can’t hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.
Guy: But --
Kirk: Awesome!
