Pointless Pools

Posted under General

Agreed. Just because a large number of the pictures were from Touhou doesn't make it a "Touhou favorites pool". IIRC something like 20% of all posts on Danbooru are from Touhou. That makes it almost inevitable that Touhou will be a large part of any pool's content when it's not series-specific.

pool #2244 - Soul - Crushingly Depressing
is a private copy of
pool #439 Soul-Crushingly Depressing
made just to accommodate a post #281798, which he keeps trying to put into second pool but it keeps getting deleted.

Might be pointless in a sense, but it's better than the edit war that that had turned into. At least this way it's not cluttering up -the- Soul-Crushingly Depressing pool, while still being labeled as such.

And bluntly, we're talking about an image of a girl lovingly holding the guy who raped her. Not "just" raped either - but raped, beaten, humiliated, and tortured repeatedly, over and over and over again, until there was nothing left of her mind but a broken shell. And this is the 'good' ending - if she doesn't break, she gets killed. If that doesn't deserve to be labeled 'soul-crushingly depressing', I don't know what does.

That isn't relevant. The pool is still pointless, and the image itself is not depressing. If you think the context should be labeled as depressing, why would it stop there? Should any happy image from School Days be filed under Soul-Crushingly Depressing because we know what's going to happen to their happiness in the end? Obviously not, so why would this image be filed as depressing due to extraneous information?

Images that require explanation or a bunch of external meta-knowledge where meta-knowledge is not the flat-out point of the pool (ie. wow that was fast) should not be added to a pool that is entirely composed of images that you can tell instantly how it corresponds to the pool.

In other words, you're saying it shouldn't be in pool #439?

<snarky>Well, gee, look - it's not.</snarky>

Ok, seriously - I think the solution to this is a separate pool where meta-knowledge is the point. That was the basic idea of pool #2244 - it wasn't completely pointless - but perhaps it can be made into something that is a bit less so. I actually had been thinking of something along those lines before - this isn't the first image I've run across that was deceptively misrepresentative of it's source (though it certainly is the worst).

Big difference between images of characters who are going to -end- in tragedy, and images of those who have already -come- to it. Just in case this wasn't clear: this image isn't innocent snuggling before the horror starts, it's afterwords - a hunter proudly standing over his trophy, the corpse of his prey. That's not a metaphor - the name of the game translates to "Girl Hunt" after all - and it's clearly meant literally.

You miss the point.

Firstly, the image itself contains no depressing imagery or text. You cannot deny this, as this is not an opinion, but a fact. At face value, it is a woman cradling a sleeping man in her arms.

Secondly, this means that the new pool, being a copy of the Soul-Crushingly Depressing pool that you made solely to house this image that many other people feel did not belong in the original pool, was pointless.

These two points together (really, just the second point alone would do as well) mean pool #2244 in its old form was not worthy of keeping. Whether or not its new form has any merit is to be seen. A pool based on context may or may not be kept, I think such pools have already been removed before but I'm not sure.

And for the purpose of this argument, whether the tragedy is going to happen or has already happened makes no difference. Images are judged and pooled depending on their content at face value, not on the back story of the characters depicted.

pool #2233 - Touhou - Playable Command

Collection of the human characters from Touhou, which could be cover by searching for character name and metatag count.

Ex: hakurei_reimu kirisame_marisa kochiya_sanae izayoi_sakuya konpaku_youmu chartags:5

You can also remove some names and make chartags:4 or chartags:4. So the pool is pretty much several tag-combination searches put together.

If this goes then pool #1053 would have to go also, for similar reasons, and personally I'd prefer that they both stay.

It's also worth noting Member-level users can only search for 2 tags at once.

The Old Maids Alliance is a meme within the fandom, and it's noticeable in fan art when they're grouped together giving off an air of maturity, trying too hard to look young, or getting poked fun at for being old.

I don't have a problem with pool #2233, as long as the pool emphasizes pictures showing something related to being player characters in Touhou. Otherwise, yeah, it's just fancy searches.

This thread is becoming the most confusing one to deal with of all, where half the suggestions end up really needing discussion threads of their own to deal with. The format is getting unwieldy.

As for the Source Best Left Unknown pool... eh. My objection, beyond anything everyone else posted, is the potential for spoilers, by drawing attention to things outside of and indeed directly contradictory of the message the image itself sends.

Since it only has two images and limited potential to grow in the future and has a whole host of issues others have raised, I've removed it.

Doesn't seem like anything that puyopuyo style_parody wouldn't cover. Not all posts in the pool have the tags, though. If somebody's going to nuke this pool, let me know and I'll tag the posts properly first.

Mmm... It is redundant, but it's so clear cut and thematically coherent. I'm mixed.

As for the Touhou pool, the tag search to achieve that is really convoluted and the theme is pretty concrete so I guess we can leave it.

Meta pools are about as useful as a women's prostate exam, and no one gives a shit except fanboys.

And so do memes, comics, and series in general.
There's the commentary tag for similar reasons because, spoilers aside, you obviously enjoy stuff better when you get the full picture. I'm not saying it deserves pools, but I see nothing wrong with taking an interest in what lies beyond the art when you can.
