Clarifying what content is prohibited by the rules

Posted under General

Some points of the ToS/list of flag reasons seem either unclear or outdated, and I think they should be clarified.

Here is the current ToS, for your reference:

Prohibited Content

In addition, you may not upload any of the following:

  • Non-anime: Photographs of American porn actresses, for example, are prohibited. Photographs of cosplayers, figures, or prominent figures in the industry are acceptable.
  • Furry: Any image or movie where a person's skin is made of fur or scales.
  • Watermarked: Any image where a person who is not the original copyright owner has placed a watermark on the image.
  • Poorly compressed: Any image where compression artifacts are easily visible.
  • Grotesque: Any depiction of extreme mutilation, extreme bodily distension, feces, or bodies that are far outside the realm of normal human proportion (for example, breasts that are larger than three heads in size or penises that are larger than two heads in size).
  • Manga: Uploading entire manga or doujinshi chapters is discouraged. Individual pages can be uploaded if they meet the quality criterion.
  • Nude Filter: Images that have been edited by someone other than the original creator to remove clothing or censorship. These typically feature crude drawings of breasts or genitalia laid on top of the original image.
  • Fake translations: Images that have false translations are not allowed in any case.
  • Hard translations: Images that have been edited to replace the original language are discouraged.

And the list of flag reasons:

If you believe a post does not belong on this site, you can flag for its deletion. As a reminder, the following are some common reasons for flagging a post:

  • Not anime-related
  • Furry: a character has body fur or an animal face
  • Watermark: text or logo inserted by someone besides the original artist
  • Poor compression: JPEG artifacts
  • Guro: mutilation, extreme bodily distension
  • Bad proportions: extremely large breasts or penises
  • Manga: Multiple pages of a manga, doujinshi, or comic that don't stand up to individual scrutiny
  • Fake translations: Made up translations are banned

The following are NOT valid reasons for flagging a post:

  • Duplicate: just parent to the original

I think these should be clarified:

  • Furry - fur and scales are allowed; I believe western furry porn specifically is what is not.
  • Watermarks - are allowed if from the original artist (regardless of whether they are the copyright holder or not).
  • JPEG artifacts - must be particularly noticeable.

Here are my suggestions (changes in bold):

In addition, you may not upload any of the following:

  • Non-anime: Photographs of American porn actresses, for example, are prohibited. Photographs of cosplayers, figures, or prominent figures in the industry are acceptable.
  • Furry: Western pornography containing a person whose skin is made of fur or scales.
  • Watermarked: A person who is not the original artist has placed a watermark on the image.
  • Poorly compressed: Any image where compression artifacts are easily visible.

Does anyone have any additional/alternative suggestions?

Artifacts was changed to it's current states because artifacting isn't limited to jpeg.

You're right. Revised the OP.

No point in specifying western pornography either.

What should it be, then?

Can we get rid of "not anime-related" as a flag reason?
CHANGE "not anime-related" to "photo" or similar?

Because that's not what it means. The usage of anime in this sense is more like animu, the mocking declaration of anime like tropes in other shit, like VNs or manga. Really what that should be changed to is not Japan/Japanese related or something like that.

It would really be nice to update the section about how old posts shouldn't be flagged for the sake of them having been around since before the rules. In some cases it's upheld and in some cases it's stated that "we got rid of that rule."
EDIT: Though that's in howto:upload, dunno about the ToS...

Watermark can be placed by a copyright holder or publisher and still be completely legit. I'm not sure how to properly word this, but both ToS and list of flag reasons should clearly state that only "Third-party watermarks" are prohibited.

Even "Japan/Japanese related" is not accurate. We have more than enough scenery, cityscape, landscape images that are not necessarily related to Japan or anything from it.
This point in ToS has wrong title, but correct description. It should really be something along the lines of "Photographs" or "Non-artwork". Although, western commercial artwork is usually not accepted, so this should be mentioned too.

Prohibited Content

  • Manga: Uploading entire manga or doujinshi chapters is discouraged. Individual pages can be uploaded if they meet the quality criterion.

This needs to be clarified. Uploading whole chapters of commercial manga is completely prohibited. But freeware doujins are allowed as long as they satisfy other requirements.

Prohibited Content

  • Nude Filter: Images that have been edited by someone other than the original creator to remove clothing or censorship. These typically feature crude drawings of breasts or genitalia laid on top of the original image.

This needs a small clarification as well, namely removal of "or censorship" words. Decensoring is a separate thing from nude_filters, this was even agreed upon in original discussion (topic #1791).

And there are one other thing that probably needs to be added to ToS/flag reasons. I remember reading somewhere at the forum that image macros are prohibited.
Perhaps we should also mention in the description that image may be accepted if the text was added by original artist. Although, this is extremely rare and I'm not even sure it can be called "image macro" if original artist did it himself.

Yes it is. If you want to argue that it shouldn't be that way that's fine, but that is what that rule is meant to imply.

We have more than enough scenery, cityscape, landscape images that are not necessarily related to Japan or anything from it.

To this specifically all of that should be either done by Japanese artists or by an artist who's gotten in here first with some more Japan-centric thing. And don't try and find an exception, I'm sure there are a few, I'm just illustrating how these can, and usually do, fit in just fine under that rule.

This point in ToS has wrong title

We can certainly agree on that.
