Tag Question: bread_eating_contest

Posted under General

I spotted the bread_eating_contest in the food tag group and wanted to write the wiki for it, but I don't quite understand what it is. If I do any searches for bread eating contests, I get the speed eating ones rather than this whole track and field business going on in the tagged posts. Is it an actual type of contest, or a fictional one?

It's an actual contest called "パン食い競走" in Japanese. From what I could tell after a brief search, the main part is just to eat hanged bread using their mouths and without using their hands. A footrace to the location of the bread may or may not be involved, but it seems it usually is.

e: BCI Temp is right; my brief search was too brief.

Actually, AFAIK, you're not supposed to actually *eat* the bread until you cross the finish line. You have to finish the lap with it in your mouth after snatching it off the string without using your hands. (See, e.g. post #1004667.)

Sometimes they even use prepackaged bread, still in the wrapper. (See, e.g. post #1364141.)

I thought it was to get the bread off or something.
