By this, I think you mean these?:

create implication nintendo_3ds_xl -> nintendo_3ds
create implication nintendo_3ds_ll -> nintendo_3ds

You can't use wildcards in aliases/implications.

The * is there to indicate which ever direction the first alias goes, so if we choose to alias nintendo_3ds_xl to nintendo_3ds_ll, then we'd implicate the ll one to the standard 3DS tag. If we go the other way and alias ll to xl, likewise we'd have the xl one implicate the standard 3DS tag.

Oh, I didn't read the OP carefully enough. Sorry.

As far as the direction of the alias: Unsurprisingly, it seems we go with the original Japanese name for consoles with localized names, judging by sega_genesis being aliased to sega_mega_drive, and famicom/super_famicom being used over their English equivalents. So aliasing nintendo_3ds_xl -> nintendo_3ds_ll seems appropriate.

While I could understand the Genesis/Mega Drive (IIRC, they look the same), the Famicom and NES are distinctly different in appearance. Even in StreetPass Mii Plaza there's separate instances of the two systems (as...hats).
