    I'm familiar with Hachi's version, and I like that Tewi, too.

    My real issue with Tewi isn't that she's a troll, it's that in most interpretations, she's nothing BUT a mean-spirited troll. She doesn't do it to make people laugh or anything, just to be a jerk, which is hard for me to like.

    But, then again, this is Touhou. Character != character interpretation. In a similar way I like Shikieiki Yamaxanadu, but dislike the way she's usually portrayed as being a strict jerk for the sake of being a jerk. Sometimes it's easier to make a character unlikable for the sake of a joke.

    Incorrect, its based on per character. If we talk about someone like Medicine, then ya, theres not much to go on. But if we were talk about Reimu,Marisa,Sakuya,Remilia,Yukari, ya know, characters that appear in a majority of games as well as have signifigant importance in the canon manga/novels then there isn't much of an excuse other than saying "I did it for the lulz". Even Rinnoske has alot more of canon material to back up his character compared to the 1 appearance characters.

    Often, it's not much about the canon. It's about whether they like the interpretation or not. Say, take a complete asshole character and interpret him/her as someone clearly different, someone very benevolent and loving and whatnot (or course preferably in a way that it makes sense), I'm sure many people would still like the interpretation, perhaps even more than the original.

    Eh, maybe that was a bad example. But nonetheless, it's easy to see "I like this <insert character name>" when there's an alternative portrayal. Starting with this one, in fact. Even Reimu, obviously the most well-elaborated character in Touhou, is one of the Touhou characters with the most alternative portrayals around. And I don't recall seeing much complaint about any of them, except when Reimu is depicted as a slut crazed for sex.
