I'm not sure, but the "yarou" in the first panel means "yam", right? So, would it be "Once in a while, I can cook some yam"?

It's the volitional form of "yaru" (to do). See:

Oh, by the way, helpful protip:
wash your onions briefly when you've peeled or cut them (but not while chopping, since then you'd end up with half the onion in the drain); this will eliminate almost all of the eye-stinging-ness.

Or you can simply stop being a little bitch and put the pain in the box, where it goes.

It's not a matter of pain, it's that onions, as a defense mechanism against foragers, have a gas within their bulbs that will transform moisture in the tear ducts into sulfuric acid.

Even if you ignore the pain, (and yes, I've tried just chugging through it,) you can't stop your eyes from tearing up reflexively to wash some of the acid out of your eyes, and just standing there letting the acid in your eyes only makes you tear up more and more until you completely can't see, no matter how much you "man up and take the pain".

As an additional or alternative defense to Alignn's, however, you can also just... step back a bit, and not lean directly over the onion when you chop. The gasses tend to float directly upwards, so standing to the side lets you evade most of it, especially if you turn the kitchen vent on.

I have to finish before Yukirin comes back from the library
Although I wouldn't boast that my cooking "tastes like home"...
...I wonder if what I've done is unnecessary.
....... I guess this is the best I can manage with learning by imitation.
    ...OK, I'll cook.
    *stew*
I should treat her once in a while.
