This is how I feel when playing games like Fable where barrels, boxes and pots are always empty just to make some sort of post-modern point about videogame mechanics versus reality.
Unless the entire environment lends itself to some form of breakage as per game mechanics, I think it's just a waste of system resources. Now you've generated a bunch of useless things to which the player will never be interested.

See, that's what usually happens when game designers try to do a "clever" subversion of classic tropes. It's sort of funny and ironic on paper, but just ends up being frustrating and anti-climatic for the player. See also the final "boss" of Fable 2 for the best example of this.

Although I find this whole discussion intriguing and sincerely interesting, it's a tad bit funny to see people get so upset about empty pots.
You spend hours of your life smashing up pottery in a frantic search for rupees, bombs, arrows, hearts etc, only to come up empty-handed - then see how funny you find it!
