LunaTech and Fujiwara General Mechanics made an agreement back in the fifties. When they did so, LunaTech agreed to buy $24 billion of their shares. In return, Fujiwara General Mechanics agreed to share their technical knowledge -- a corporate marriage that seemed to be a match made in heaven.
This agreement worked well through the boom decades, until the 1980s. Without their knowing, LunaTech unveiled a line of products that had been directly copied, improved on, and patented well before Fujiwara General mechanics could do so! This included the fantastic 1982 Hourai Elixir, a family sedan of unparalleled efficiency and design. One week before the unveiling of their new products, LunaTech shorted $145 billion worth of Fujiwara General Mechanics stock.
The consequences were disastrous. In the week before LunaTech shorted them, Fujiwara General Mechanics was trading at $78 per share, in the following weeks, it would plunge to a mere 68 cents. The company went bust, Mokou's father was ruined and in his desperation turned to drink, and Mokou herself spent the next 30 years in a complex tangle of litigation and countersuits that left her family finances ruined.
Sounds like something that might have happened in real life, and probably has. WOuldn't be surprised to see this Mokou leaping at the throat of this world Kaguya if they met.
