That's characteristic of maps made in the USA (and Asia, maybe?). They place their own continent in the center, just as Europeans do, but maps are customarily arranged to have ocean on the edges, not continents, so the Americas are shifted right (left on European maps), the Pacific goes into the middle of the map, and the Atlantic ocean goes on the edges of the map (reversed in Europe, with the Atlantic in the middle of the map, and the Pacific along the edges).
