The funny thing is, this shouldn't actually happen since they both are pure beings.

Hmm, I suppose you can call the Lunarian society an imitation of the Celestial society. But they're really different though. The Lunarians still have change and progress while the Celestials are perfectly stagnant since they're already content with what they have.
Oh, and please stop misusing the word "Mary Sue". I've seen too many Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings Mary Sue OCs to know that Yorihime doesn't fit with the definition.
Yorihime and Tensho both have the biggest inflated ego in the Touhou kingdom. A power syndrome in a different archaic level as a result of being born in a sheltered, higher class environment.
Their way of interaction to another being is what differentiate the two: Yori chooses individuals that she will accept into her social contact (and since she comes from a "higher status", of course the selection is very limited), while Tenshi pesters everyone to accept herself as their center of attention (to the point of being rude).
If I were to quote a dialogue from a movie to illustrate this situation: "what will happen if an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" ?

It might be more accurate to call Celestial society the imitation since the Lunarians were likely doing their thing long before. Furthermore, the Watatsukis and Tenshi debuted around the same time (2008/2009), and besides that, ZUN's Lunarian concept was around a few years before he even mentioned celestials.

I wasn't talking in a meta sense by the way.
Anyway, I'm not too sure about that. The wiki says Heaven was created a long, long time ago by pulling a keystone from Earth, making all the life on it perish.
Maybe the real answer is no one's imitating the other.
But really, we still lack information about the relationship between the Lunarians and the Celestials. Offhand comments like in Iku's profile on SoPM can't be relied on so perhaps we should just stop talking about this. This discussion starts from an insult anyway.

Pass me some popcorn and a soda, and let the chaos ensue.

Talking about a meta sense of way…
For example, what if a youkai had “existed” for 2000 years old, but then later anthropological study suggested the folklore that became the base of that youkai is actually only 500 hundred years old (but already very prominent during the creation of Hakurei border). Being fantasy creature, the proof of their existence don’t need to be consistent.
So, is that youkai 500 years old or 2000 years old ?
