  • Deathstar Reflections

Darth Vader showing a rarely seen somber moment of grief as he pauses to mourn the loss of the troops that he lost in the destruction of the 1st Deathstar.

This is a piece I did to premier at the Cape Girardeau Comic Con in Cape Girardeau Missouri. It is an homage of sorts to both Lee Teter's "Vietnam Reflections" [link] and to Star Wars.

I wanted to do a Star Wars piece that would stand out from the crowd a bit, so I thought a more somber and emotional piece would be a great contrast to the usual action works that you see. Written in Aurabesh on the memorial wall are the names of family, friends, and loved ones that I and some of my closest friends have lost.

Yeah, I know it's a real memorial, but I can't help but laugh. That thing must ring the whole planet.

Vader felt compassion for his trooper? Not very becoming a Sith Lord.

This is why I fly Empire.
This is why I fly TIE Fighters.

You'll rue the day, rebel scum!

Actually Vader did have some kind of tiny appreciation for competent and skilled soldiers who served him well. He not only killed those who failed him, he promoted and rewarded the ones who did their job (Piett being an example). That's why despite his scary reputation some Imperial troopers still saw him as a great warrior and commander. Those in the wall must have been some of those...

Somehow I think this would hit harder if it was Clone Troopers and others lost in the Clone War as oppose to the Rebellion. (timing of the war verse the wall would be better as well).

I found the artist of the picture here, and it's got a whacking great big watermark on it. Take that how you will.

Yep. That Veers guy from the Empire Strikes Back is the only guy that made a mistake (letting Luke escapes) and lived. Oh, and did I said that Vader is responsable for his promotion?

Veers was the AT-AT commander who captured the Hoth rebel base. Piett was the one who let escape the Millenium Falcon with Luke at the end of Empire...

Was Piett the guy we see on screen while the officer, um, Ozzel dies? The guy that Vader strangled to death for being clumsy and stupid?

Yeah that's him. Needa was another Commander who was also force-choked by Vader when he failed to capture the Falcon (before Bespin).

In Star Wars Battlefront 2's campaign mode, the 501st Legion, at the time the only Stormtrooper unit made up of only the Old Republic's clones, were directly assigned to Lord Vader. Two-thirds of that unit were wiped out during the Death Star's destruction.

The 501st were quite fond of Vader, weren't they? At least, they were very proud to serve him.

Anakin was the General of the 501st along with Obi wan, which they both lead many victories for those clones during the war. So yeah, they were a very proud division.
Even still working together in the empire.
