Forbidding men from having long hair and women from wearing miniskirt or trouser-suits, Hastings Kamuzu Banda imposed many restrictions on his people including a dress code. Despite having tight control over freedom of speech and information, his moves to promote the status of women was quite positive in Africa during his day.
In the illustration, she had captured a girl who did not follow the dress code. Miss Banda forcibly removed the trouser-suit from her and cut the long hair, but in actuality it was only the men who were forbidden from having long hair.
