Confused here as well. I've been enjoying shepherd0821's take on MLP, and I'm not even a fan.

I think it's some bronies thinking that it takes away the characters' innocence and makes them less "clean", in a way.

Pony Fandom, like any fandom, has its fair share of die-hards, purists, nutjobs, whackjobs, perverts, casual fans, and psychopaths. It just gets more scrutiny and is pretty big at the moment, so the strange demands and creations stand out more.

For the same reason anime characters drawn in western style do - purists.
Also there's the uncanny valley with some types of anthro - human-like arms and hands BUT horse-like hind legs with hooves, that looks genuinely freaky.
