Seems I jumped the gun a little when I first saw the announcement by Key on Youtube. Assumed they were fully green lighting the Kud Wafter anime, news I had been waiting to hear for the past six months. Turns out it is actually going to be decided via crowdfunding instead.
I find it a little weird that Key would go the crowdfunding route as they are a big company with alot of money behind them to do something like this. I know creating an anime isn't cheap so they may not want to spend too much money on the project. A thought I had while waiting these past months was if the creation of the Kud Wafter anime was more than Key were willing to spend they could promise to put so much forward while asking the fans to meet them half way as a nice joint effort.
So far they only seem to be planning on taking donations in Japan, hopefully they will allow for western fans to contribute soon too. The huge success of the Nekopara ova Kickstarter should be proof enough of the dedication of fans outside of Japan. It may be possible the Japanese fans alone may be able to pull it off I've seen instances of those guys pulling crazy money out of thin air to fund their anime and eroge addictions. There was also the Dies Irae anime crowdfunding campaign that got over three times the asking cost.
If this is successful will this anime be a full series or an all in one movie? Edit: Looks like it will be a movie.
The crowdfunding campaign has only been live for a few days and has already nearly reached the requested amount and it still has 70 days left with which it may gather extra funds. Still waiting on the possible western crowdfunding they said they were working on.
Edit: Looks like I was once again incorrect, thanks to Google translate. The initial 30mil yen target simply covers a 20 minute ova with every extra +50% funding adding an extra 10 minutes. Probably with an overall goal of possibly making it a full movie.
Still over two months on the Japanese front with a Kickstarter for western backers hopefully coming soon.
