Artist's commentary

Sometimes, somethings are too embarassing when praised.

    Reminder, round rectangles are flashbacks!

And that's a pretty good marketing strategy...

    Chen, dirty thoughts are bad!

We need to see Chen's works. Stat.

That embarrassing moment when your work got praised and you feel so embarrassed you want to crawl into a hole and hide forever, or you want to jump into a fire and get burned to ash.

Printed colors are different from those you see on screen, of course, so tweaking them seems to be a craftsman's art.

Even if you normally draw adults-only books, it seems having your stuff stared at in a place like this is embarrassing. Chen-chan's a nekomata, so she's probably over 18, which means there's no problem with her drawing this kind of stuff! :-)

Of course, if she weren't, she couldn't be our third-day Funnel, could she.

(Reminder: "Funnel" here is taken from the Gundam term for remote-control drones. It means a runner you send to shop for you at a convention while you're stuck at the booth.)

Reader-added tags include "Public execution", "No such thing as a free lunch, huh, Chen-chan", and "Funabori parody". (Refers to riffs on a panel from the manga D-Frag! showing the character Funabori blushing and smiling)

The survey wants to offer words of encouragement:

What should I call out to Chen-chan?
    • It's all right!
    • Well done!
    • It's sexy!
    • That's so cute!
    • For you☆

All I know that someone will be after my head if I say the last one, so the third or fourth one it is!

I... I always thought Chen was Yukari's and Ran's child...
Even with Hitoshi saying she's older than 18, this seems like a really dysfunctional (and awesome) family now

Chen-chan is both over 18 and a hentai doujin artist? Well, I think that just blew my mind away. Huh... don't worry, Chen-chan, everyone is just admiring what a good job you did, no need to be embarrassed!

For the poll, that last one might get me killed, but totally worth it.

@Fychan: Maybe they're a set of three siblings, with Yukari the eldest and Chen the youngest (younger than Ran by a margin of perhaps ten years)?

@Fychan: i STILL think this chen is the child of the ran-shama and the yukari person. if you've seen mizuki at anime boston 2012 (or at least a video of the event) you'll know that he's not the newest umbrella there is~
so, assuming his friends are of similar age, yukari can be around 40 and chen's mom.
i'd be more interested in whether this chen is a girl in reality.
not impossible: as mizuki has already shown, his sanae is into drawing boobies, too!

Going by the ages of quite a few big name commercial artists it's not improbable that there might be fanartists who are parents or even grandparents. Not to mention the fact that the average age of parenthood used to be lower.

That depends on how strict the printing house is, and it varies from firm to firm.

In my country there are handful of printing and publishing houses who refuse to take any work until the client has converted the color profiles on the softcopy from RGB to CMYK or Pantone. This is to streamline their workflow, because CMYK and Pantone color palettes are much more paper-accurate and much more range-limited as opposed to RGB which is designed for onscreen display.

If you convert a work with RGB color profiles to that of CMYK or Pantone you will find that it loses much of its richness and saturation. These duller colors are what you will typically see on paper once the work has been printed.

If you send them work with an RGB color profile expect it to be rejected within minutes. And for good reason; they really don't have the time to perform the profile conversion AND attempt to repair areas that lose too much detail and end up looking totally different from the original color (like how orange colors usually end up printed as brown).

It depends a lot on how big will be your order though. Once I went to a printing house and they told me we (students) should avoid converting to CMYK when printing with smaller printing houses, because there are several different CMYK and paper settings and chances are the automatic printer convertion is going to do a better job.

Of course this is about smaller work with digital printing, but seeing how SAI is one of the most used software with Japanese artists and it doesn't even have a CMYK mode I think color conversion is usually done by the printer in Japan.

I should also note that some programs are much better at converting than others. While attending university, I used Adobe software quite a bit, and used the profile converters they had. Looked rather dull and faded on screen, but it came out fine when printed. An expert who knew the printers well could do the job better, but since we printed everything ourselves, we used what we had.

Yaaay, I can get a higher print runnn!♡
Oh, this is your art, isn't it, Chen-chan!
    Oooh, sexyyyy!♡
    Huh? What's wrong, Chen?
    I see!
Shall we have them print your book too, Chen?
We start by coordinating data we get from all of you so that our coloring improves.
    Oooh, that's a naughty cover!♡
    It's so cuuute!♡
Apparently, if you offer data to them to use for explanations during the field trip, they'll print 300 copies for you.
We'll adjust the inks so that the skin tone comes out just right.
