I don't know what is more foolish, the fact that they decided to call the new type fairy and not light or that it is strong against dragons.

I've always been bothered by the idea of the Light-type for quite some time. If there are Dark (Evil in Japan) and Light types, what do you call the Pokémon that are neither? Neutral Pokémon?

    Neutral = Normal Type :).
The new "Fairy" type is bothered me as well.

If Dragon-types are stiff of legends, then Fairy-types are stuff of...tales?

"Fae" may have rolled off better, but only older nerds would be familiar enough with that term over the more immediately recognizable "fairy" (which, considering the "tales" associated, could be pretty twisted).

Much as Dragon-type has another nerf, I'd be surprised if it wasn't weak to Dark-type*, which off the side of my head I can only think of it being strong against Psychic and maybe itself (but resisting itself sounds more likely).

I'm more thrown off by not only Gardevoir gaining the typing, but that it was grouped with Clefairy and Marrill is introducing it.

*edit: though apparently there's no resistance of Fairy by Dark

After finally processing the fact that a new type is coming in and I totally missed that (again) I rushed to Bulbapedia and found a pretty interesting article concerning the name

Will Celebi become a threat if it gains Fairy type?
(Celebi is obviously a fairy lol)

They haven't announce anything outside of fairy type having an advantage over dragon. From what I see around, fairy type is suppose to be weak against poison due to the fact that poison types are weak to only like...grass? And every grass pokemon have a sub that pretty much cancel poison out or is so close approximation that poison don't even matter. However, just rumors and speculation.

Fairy Type is suppose to balance the game although it took them six generation for that and I call bullshit on whatever they call balance.

Also, I still would have been happier if Sylveon was a ghost type and the method to evolve Eevee was smashing it to a rock.

I doubt Celebi would become a Fairy type, as it is already a dual type. It's Grass/Psychic.

It's possible they might give some of the more fairy type pokemons new forms as they have been doing recently. Seeing how Xerneas is going to some sort of forest pokemon it's highly possible there will be some relation between it and other Forest pokemons like Celebi.

Also the fact that Mewtwo was able to gain another form would also mean there is a high possibility that other older pokemons will also get a chance at alternate forms.

I really hope dark isn't weak against fairy.
The last thing Hydreigon needs is a double weakness...

If a very plausible rumor I've heard is true, (as the person seems to have been right about Fairy existing, flying battles, and the first gym leader being bug type) then Fairy is super effective against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting. Once again, not confirmed, but with what they seem to have gotten right, then likely. Poor Hydreigon...

So Scrafty has a problem with the Fair Folk as well...

From what I've heard, the full type-match list for Fairy is as follows:

    --Impervious to: Dragon
--Extra damage against: Dragon, Fighting, Dark
    --Vulnerable to: Poison, Steel
--Less damage against: Fire, Psychic (So Reshiram, Latios, and Latias can rest somewhat easy)

Impervious to Dragon? This...I can not understand.

    The other type immunes makes sense such as;
-Steel being steel can't be poison since...well, it's freaking steel which can block off poison as well as the innards are probably made of iron.
-Flying is immune to ground since they won't touch the grounds
-ghost is immune to fighting and normal since it has no form to be hit or can easily phrase through tackles
-normal is immune to ghost since its normal to not believe in ghost therefore ghosts can't bother you since ghosts are assholes that crave attention
-Ground is immune to electricity due to normal physics or hell even just basic science
-Dark is immune to psychic because when you're already when you already hit rock bottom you'll probably need more then supernatural mind powers to get you out of the pit.

It would make more sense if fire was immune to dragon or dragon was immune to fire since the two go hand in hand. I can't see how Tinkerbell can stand in front of a dragon 10x her size and act as if nothing happen after it Fus-Rah-Da her right in the face.

Unless fairy is actually suppose to be Light rather then actual Fairy its confusing.

I'd like to point you to the bulbapedia article posted above. Fairies are strongly rooted in magic and mythology. In this case the 'Fairy-type' is more akin to a 'Magic-type' which has a long history of vanquishing evil and dragons.

Unfortunately the "Tinkerbell" image of fairies as tiny girly human flies is the one ingrained into cultural perception thanks to Disney works and such. Thus knee-jerk reactions to the 'Fairy-type' is common.

Yeah but if that was true I don't see why they have to use the term Fairy and insuch, cutesy-girly looking pokemon. I can understand the magic and evil vanishing part although if that was true then it would have probably gave it a name like Holy type or just plain magic itself. We have psychic and many other unknown mystic features in pokemon so magic wouldn't really be consider out of place. Well, I shouldn't be the one to judge namings though. I just find it weird, thats all.

I just hope that fairy types if it does comes out extend to more then just the girly, small pokemons. I would love to see pokemons similar to Gallade(a shame he already have 2 types) to be a sort of dragon-slayer pokemon rather then freaking Marills attacking a Salamance 5 times it size.

Opinionwise, the above picture having a Slyveon overpowering a Hydreigon doesn't really scream cool or anything. Just makes Hydreigon look sad, as if it was a big man being beaten down by a little girl. Well, I guess we'll see once the game comes out then.

I think the reason why they decided on fairy type and not light type is probably because in the Japanese version of the game dark type is seen more as evil and fighting type is more seen as good.
As in dark type = dirty fighting
    Fighting type = proper fighting.

    Something like that.

Kind of like a gangster vs. karate expert.

The weakness against Steel types might have something to do with the tale of Fairy detesting pure iron or horse-shoe. And against Poison? Simple, Fairies won't show in polluted environment. Go Muk!
