I'm liking this new Negima installment so far. This pic having a more balanced girl/boy ratio is a welcome change.
I am so thrilled Akamatsu returned to this world, even if it's not to "patch up" the ending as many hoped. (I'm still hoping, someday...) but for now this is more than awesome.

Well it was basically a Rage Quit, I mean I can't say I blame him but it was still REALLY annoying to see a series I loved, and one that seemed like it still had a long and bright future ahead to just come to a complete stop with a clusterfuck of an ending.
I'm still kinda on the fence about this series though, I had hoped that a Negima revival would be a direct continuation and not a sequel series that basically involves only a single returning character.

Dude, the story is literally just getting started. It's about a hundred chapters too soon to say that there's only one returning character. Scuttlebutt on /a/ says that at the very least there's been a cameo by Shinobu in the second chapter, so that's two at the least.

I'd still rather a direct continuation, picking up more or less exactly where he left off, not some distant future sequel where majority of the old cast has long since died of old age. Ken left a ton of plot points completely unresolved with negima's ending and I just can't see this sequel giving a satisfying conclusion to most of those.
Yeah, the Negima ending could've been concluded a little more tactfully, but there may be some reasons why Akamatsu-sensei had to do what he did in a hurry:
As usual in these copyright debates (whether in Japan or the U.S.), it is all about control, with the giant publishing companies using the pretense of concern over piracy to in fact dictate how, when, and where a product is delivered. The author is on the losing end, as is the consumer. No wonder Akamatsu-sensei had no desire to sign a new contract with Kodansha, and made sure to get all of his works out of Kodansha's archives. It would also explain why he was willing to end Negima! in the way he did, just to protect his copyright claim.
Whether that's the reason Negima! ended the way it did or not, I had no idea that this new law was even in the pipeline in Japan. Unlike the Tokyo Child Protection law, which received a lot of attention among us Western anime/manga fans, the new "Neighboring Copyright Law" doesn't appear to have generated much of any notice outside of Japan. This is kind of surprising, since this new law would pretty much kill the doujinshi market in Japan. No doubt if this law passes, Japanese publishers will come after us Western bloggers too, for any number of reasons (screen captures; sharing promo art; providing detailed summaries, etc.).
Yeah, I'd GTFO of the publishing contract too if this really was the case.
I fully support Ken's decision to abruptly end Negima! as an up and coming Manga-ka myself. I would rather kill off my own series myself rather than have the publishing companies dry out it's soul to nothing but a filthering husk of what it once were. It's one of the reason's i'm finding it hard to sign a contract with any of the big time publishing companies and instead just decided to self publish. I may lose out on major advertising but at least I would keep my creative control over my work.
I'm sure that to Ken, it was like putting an old dog down. You don't want to do it, but it's better to put it out of it's misery.
I normally say most IP disputes can go fuck themselves with the horse they road in on... but while I may be a dirty pirate I do respect that hell yes the original author is in ultimate control of the material.
That's one of the core things I think has been forgotten if IP protection ever wasn't just a corporate sham operation. That it should protect the actual creators from having their material exploited.
Yah, transgender boy-in-a-girl's-body is a very real possibility, particularly given his past as having had involuntary bodily modifications as the origin of his immortality.
