Assuming those heels will be used as grips, I like the redesign.
    Otherwise, pretty strange looking.

Awwww yeah. Samus has been given Cammy's Cannon Spike as her air recovery attack. Now she has two moves from her including her Cannon Strike.

She was always sexy and very feminine remember before Zero Mission the Zero Suit she wore a girly pink swimsuit and later sexy black underwear under her armor. I'm glad Other M didn't scare them into trying to make her overly PC and boring.

So are you saying that powerful women can't enjoy wearing high heels? Samus is A woman after all, and who's to say that she can't enjoy having A nice pair of high heels, and a good looking space suit. I really want her to have a solid character, and good emotional core, but for goodness sakes, let to woman enjoy her high heels. She must have saved up a lot of money killing metroids to get those.

More that Samus once represented something different; in the days of Contra and Metal Gear where buff men with scars, bandannas, and huge guns tore through hordes of enemies, Samus did the same and shocked people when it was revealed that she was a girl. The "problem" I see is that they keep moving her more and more toward every other girl character and their stereotypes, just with a weapon in hand. Further down this road she'll be in a pink dress with a shiny flower in her hair and a parasol, maybe with a laser in it.

That argument makes sense when talking about a real person, who has the freedom to make that choice, but Samus is a video game character who's personality and wardrobe is decided by someone else. 'Samus' didn't choose to wear high heels, her character designers gave her high heels.

As far as the heels go, I have never heard anybody utter the phrase, "Heels are just so comfortable and easy to walk in!" Because they aren't. Heels aren't comfortable for even standing in, why would a hardened warrior with an entire life's worth of combat experience decide that foot wear that isn't practical for everyday use, is somehow practical for heated combat?

Dunno, one can say that it's a fantasy world, where these heels specifically are made for combat, and travel. I personally don't care for Samus's high heels. Again, she's a female character. She might like wearing high heels, just like a guy would like to go topless. I'm not trying to create a false equivilency between a man, and a woman, but I think that people are taking this whole thing out of context. Yeah, Other M did a horrible job examining Samus' character, and the way they planned out the whole game was unintentionally sexist. Things weren't helpful when Team Ninja, the developer that treats women like glorified sex dolls, the chance to work on a well established female character.

Personally, I don't think that the Other M ruined the Metroid series. We all can't hit a home run all the time, and this is only one bad game, out of many good games in the series. People will likely forget this game ever existed, and will anticipate the next game. Though they did fail in the charachter development depertment, it dosen't mean that they still shouldn't try to give Samus a personality, and flaws. I want a new Metroid game with the third-person gameplay style of "Metroid Blasters" in NintendoLand, and a well written story, that fleshes out the world of Metroid. Maybe with some actually bounty hunting missions,an large space station, with many open-ended paths, a cool competitive multi-player, customizable skins, fun little moments with Samus in her ship, and better voice acting.

I would perferably let Epic Games handle the future development of Metroid games, becasue it's clear that many of the Japanese game devs don't know how to make pulse-pounding third-person shooters(no offense to japanese devs). Anyways, i just hope that the next Metroid game will give Samus a more engagin personality.

I don't see why being a female character automatically means she's gonna want to wear heels. Maybe she might like to go topless and Little Mac might wanna wear heels. Sure, everyone, or at least nearly everyone, wants to wear nice clothes or look pretty or whatever every once in a while. And it's not the heels themselves that bother me. If she was going to a fancy party or having a girls' night on the town or anything where heels would make sense, it'd be fine.

But she's going to fight in them. If you went to war wearing heels, you would definitely break your ankles. If you look at a list of pros and cons for heels, all of the cons would be health and practicality related and the pros aesthetically related. There is literally no practical reason for wearing heels to fight.

As far as I've heard, they're just boosters intended to strengthen her leg power to allow her to perform on equal footing with the varia suit. I haven't seen anything that states that they do anything beneficial to her balance. If they come up and say something like,"The heels use electromagnetic pulses to improve her balance and maintain her center of gravity" or something to that effect, then I'll stop caring, assuming that whatever reason they came up with didn't sound like bullshit. It's just the sheer impracticality of the design that irritates me.

And yeah Other M shouldn't ruin the series. Was it a step in the wrong direction? Absolutely, but if Devil May Cry can come back from the 2ND game being so bad even the Director of the 1st game was like "That was a mistake that shouldn't have been allowed to happen" then Metroid should be fine.

My friend and I were talking about it, and we kind of realized that the heels would have to be there because the power suit also has high heels. In addition, being on the the balls of your feet actually does help your movement by making you more agile (at least in my experience while taking karate) so I don't think it's that bad. Granted, as a guy, I've never actually worn high heels, so I dunno if they ignore the whole "being on the balls of your feet makes you faster" thing.

Well, either way, that bright yellow though.

In Brawl, and as far as I'm aware most other games, the varia suit doesn't have any significant heel height and is barely any, if at all, taller than the heels of her zero suit. I haven't seen any new official images of varia suit Samus so unless they redesigned it too, that can't be the reason for her heels. It would be a valid explanation though, besides the fact that I'm pretty sure the power suit accomplishes all the same things the heels do which defeats the purpose of wearing the them.

And heels don't really work that way. The way they raise the heel forces you to stand on your toes while balancing on your heel. I don't know a lot about karate, do you ever need to stand on your toes for any significant amount of time? To get an idea of balancing on heels, imagine trying to balance on a pole the size of your thumb for several hours with absolutely no support.

Frankly, heels serve no practical purpose whatsoever. All of the pros of wearing them are strictly cosmetic and there's a laundry list of negative short and long term effects that come with wearing them. She will break her legs fighting in those.

And yeah, I'm not feeling the neon yellow.

The problem is these high heels indicate they are staying the course of Other M.
It's a lot like saying 'DMC2 was great and under appreciated, but if we make more games like it then people will see how much better it was than the first.'

And the whole underwear thing is entirely different. She wasn't wearing it into combat. The only times you saw it was if she dies (her armor being blown off), and if you beat the game under a par time (mission is over, time to relax). Absolutely nothing like wearing high heels into combat.

Ah yeah that's a good point. Obviously western fans weren't happy with Other M, but how'd it fare in Japan? Did they care? Most of what I see people getting away with in Japan suggests to me they might not have been as bothered by it.

Oh man I guess it's a good thing Capcom realized what went wrong with DMC2 and went about fixing it for the rest of the series. An entire series based on DMC2 would have been a nightmare. I guess we'll just have to hope that they figure out that Samus can be a woman and a no nonsense warrior who doesn't need the permission of someone she could blow to hell and back to use weapons she already has and should already be using.

This is Samus Aran we're talking about. The woman can spin backwards in mid-air, and turn herself into a ball at will, WITHOUT hardcore injury to her spine. She can take fighting in high heels.

I don't have a problem with the heals. They look good in game, and the color matches her hair color nicely. As far as the practicality of heels in combat, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief because it's future tech. Even if she wore full boots, I'm not sure rocket boots would be terribly practical in real life. The only complaint I have about her design is her... increased assets. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Project Soul made her design.

They generally bitched out Sakamoto for not making something along the vein of Super Metroid. Basically he pissed off BOTH sides of the fanbase. Other M won't kill Metroid, but I can almost guarantee it's staying shelved until Sakamoto ceases to be a Nintendo asset, through age, dismissal, retirement, or righteous elimination.

THAT CANCER SPECK. It's basically Sakamoto's personal tramp stamp on the character. Revolting. I can deal with the DoA figure, Team Ninja DID design this character model. But that damn mole is just disgusting. Moles are cancer and anyone who considers them a symbol of beauty is a biology-impaired derp.

Yeah I think it's absurd as well. We're talking about a woman with alien Chozo DNA, trained as a warrior since youth on planets not our own in some far future. She clearly has otherworldly conditioning and physiology far beyond our own standards. Say what you will about Nintendo's reasons for doing so, but Samus herself can't be judged the same as a modern human.

The thing is, if they had gone with anything BUT high heels this wouldn't even be an issue.
    Bulky jet boots?
    Hover skates?
Even if some people thought they were ugly it would not have been such a source of drama, and you wouldn't be needing to reach so far for excuses to justify them.
Why did it have to be high heels?

She is a modern media character made by a modern human and looks like a modern human, therefore she is judged by the standards of a modern human, I thought that had always been the way fiction works. The same reason why characters like Gilgamesh becomes a handsome man in golden armor in Fate series instead of a musclebound tank of an "attractive" man with a whole mane of beard as the depictions in his original epic would imply.

While extremely common for both gender, the liberty of "design over practicality" in woman is often more frowned upon, probably due to the common trope in RPGs where male armor gets bulkier and more decorated in every upgrade but women gets bikini armor.

For a modern media character who is a gamer's symbol of warrior woman, some people may consider her "feminization" with the use of high heels here as being contradicting to what she stands for, more than actually how practical it is.

Or you know, they just don't like how the heels is designed and think the neon yellow is too distracting to the eyes.

    People going crazy in chat.

Oh no. Lord forbid that a series known for killing planets and species have a woman who has large breasts in spandax and wears heels like a normal woman. Let us all never complain about the over sexualization of women in comic books who wear spandax, have large breasts, and wear heels. Because we're all ok with their designs right?

Let's all go back to the good old days of Samus where we would play the game faster just to see Samus show more of her body.

    People are fucking stupid

Samus ALWAYS wore heels. Look at the art. All her costumes has a raised heel. Seamus has also always been a fan service character from the FIRST GAME with her swimsuit. Since then seeing her in various states of undress WAS A PRIZE FOR WINNING THE GAME

A woman can be strong independent and powerful and still wear what she wants. She's still the exact same character and the exact same badass.

Battle effectiveness? Apparently she's fine since she moves like she does. There's all kinda of impractical impossible designs in games. People only SUDDENLY start caring when it comes to a woman's sexuality

Apparently this is a stylistic choice in her part. If you want to take her free will away from her that's far mor objectification that any game company ever did.

The truth is we unfortunately still live in a society where it's not okay for a woman to be sexual. We aren't in the goddamn medieval era, the Catholic Church doesn't run our lives anymore but we still try to dictate how sexy a woman can and cannot be.

I'm not a huge fan of the mole, but it's really not a big deal. Overall, I really like the new look of the Zero Suit.

My problem, like many other people, is with the heels.
I understand that even though she's a badass, she can still be feminine. The problem is, heels have never been, nor will they ever be practical.
They look nice, but even in regular conditions, they're a pain in the ass to wear, and she's trying to FIGHT in those things. I don't care if she has Chozo enhancements, or if those heels are "futuristic" fighting in high-heels is not fucking possible.

I mean, look at her shoes in Brawl. Those were fine. If she had been given rocket shoes, it would have made MUCH more sense. They would have still accomplished the intended purpose, without being as impractical as a toothbrush without bristles.
Not to mention, they would actually FIT inside the Varia Suit, unlike the heels.
