There is a lot wrong with that statement. 1) First of all it was USS South Dakota, there was no USS North Dakota in World War II. The only ships named North Dakota in the US Navy were a Delaware-class Battleship scrapped in the 1930s and a modern Virginia-class Nuclear Attack Sub. 2) Despite the South Dakota taking fire from the entire Japanese fleet she was not severely damaged, her armor able to withstand the fire she was taking. She was a modern battleship, not an up-armored battlecruiser like the Kirishima. 3) The Washington did not "circle around". Both her and the South Dakota were sailing in a straight line that had been predetermined as to avoid friendly fire. 4) The Kirishima took 20 16-inch shell hits and 17 5-inch shell hits at a range of 8,000 yards. 1,000 yards is way to ridiculously close. 5) Kirishima fired on South Dakota not because she was focusing on South Dakota so much, it was because she didn't even know the Washington was there. None of the Japanese ships had radar while the Washington did. 6) Kirishima was very badly damaged, and she suddenly capsized so fast she almost crushed the destroyer Terizuki that had come along side.
