Urakaze speaks slightly in a old-timey tone (using "ja" in most places where a modern speaker would use "da" or "desu") and so does Teetoku. Urakaze's puchi (Ura-chan) speaks in nothing but "ja"s.

Both Ura-chan and Teetoku are pissed off as they think the other is imitating them.

The author also mentions something about a "Ja" festival coming next in his commentary section. Expect Tone and Hatsuharu to show up.

Almost! Urakaze speaks with a strong Hiroshima dialect, where ja is a common coupla, rather than the expected da/ya of Western Japanese (there are other dialects in Japan where this is the case, too). Teetoku totally talks all old-style; it's hard to put forward in translation, though.

(Though I'm not certain if the 'じゃじゃ's in the last panel are SFX or speech - if it's SFX, it's certainly not in any of my dictionaries...)

Eh, I'm kinda reminded of the Lancashire and Yorkshire accents, which still use "thou" and its variants in everyday speech (as is the case with most of the Oop North accents), at least among the older people. Which was why the first thing that came to mind was "old-timey".

Which, I guess, isn't an accurate description.

Old-style Japanese speech is usually rendered as The Queen's English, with proper spellings and lack of contractions (plus, optional use of the royal 'we', which fits in some cases like Hatsuharu's). The formal tone doesn't work too well for Tone though, she speaks more like an old geezer.

I've seen some translators attempt to emulate the style of 18th century novels (e.g. "two and twenty" instead of twenty-two) but that usually doesn't work too well.

Then you have some guys plugging in Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe, which can be tempting when the Japanese text is sprinkled with "nanji" all over the place. Works somewhat well until the translator inevitably slips up with the grammar, which can happen quickly due to the overuse of the '-eth' suffix even in cases where they don't belong (it's supposed to be used only for verbs in the third person singular).

Huh, never thought of using the Northern-speak. Of course, that leads to a problem of people not getting the accent - and it's pretty hard to put in text effectively, without making it impenetrable - "Ey, I'm t' Urakaze, innit! Nice ta meet tha!" but I nowt speak Northern well.

Since Teetoku does speak modern Japanese but with the　～のじゃ, yeah, that's just the RP sort of deal when I do a translation. Tone, though, she's all である/なのじゃ/我輩 and such, so that's closer to Edo/Muromachi Japanese, and thus I like to use more 'classical' English, which just comes across as more old-geezerish by nature.

The only time I go for Ye Olde Englishe is when people are speaking in Classical (usually Heian) Japanese proper, not just affecting a classical accent - though if I ever saw someone speaking Nara-period Japanese (in Manyougana), I'd have to break out the actual Ænglisc instead; which I can't do well. At all.

For the SFX at the end, I don't quite know what it should be... it's not just a stronger しゃしゃ, since that's not a SFX (as far as I know)... I'll have to go with *flail* or summat...
