As much as it is fun to see all the fanart dedicated to how much the subs supposedly hate Orel cruising, to be quite honest once you finish most of the maps, subs aren't really useful anywhere other than Orel cruising all day every day.
I hope the devs give more maps where subs are good to use in, as well as giving us more subs.

The real problem is that the game just isn't made to allow subs to actually use any tactics that would make them useful except in a place like Orel Sea.
Real subs used things like "wolfpack tactics" to divide the destroyers away from high-priority targets they could pounce upon. Real subs could chalk it up as a success if they managed to score some damage on a large enemy ship and got away unscathed, rather than being rated upon whether they wipe out several whole enemy fleets in a row. Real subs were as much the reconnaissance units of the navy as the spotter planes were.
Honestly, what they could do is start adding support expeditions where subs are useful (maybe using Taigei). For example, submarine-specific support fire missions, or submarine reconnaissance expeditions where you could reroll a bad compass spin if you sent out high-level enough subs.
As it stands, they're like bombers in an RTS - godmode if they actually work, but almost always going to have some sort of nigh-insurmountable counter baked into every defense you ever come across just to ensure you can't ever use them except in a couple specific scripted places.
Maybe more maps that had only 1-2 CLs/DDs so subs could actually cruise the map, instead of being too imba or too weak.
Anyway, the game is imbalanced in a bad way towards our own subs, and in a good way towards enemy subs (they can still hit us on Line Abreast?? And we can miss them with sonar + depth charge sometimes)
