It could be Ki-43s because I think most of the Zeros would be over the Pacific by now but it might be Zeros can't really tell

September 13, 1940, 13 A6Ms leaded by Lieutenant Shindo Saburo attacked 27 I-15s and I-16s from the Chinese Nationalist Air Force, all Chinese planes were shot down while the Japanese lost none of their planes. This was considered as Japan's first major air-to-air combat victory. Before the Pacific War broke up, the A6Ms shot down a total of 99 Chinese aircraft.

Also Ki-43s is almost the same as the A6Ms except that Ki-43s were operated by the IJAAF while the A6Ms were used by the IJNAF. Ki-43s almost shared the same performance and design of the A6M which includes its lack of armor protection and self-sealing fuel tanks, and Ki-43s are somehow a bit smaller compare to the A6M.

Oof, Low-Wing Monoplane Vs WWI era Biplanes. That'd be an absolute massacre. And Zeroes were already superior to the US's Wildcats and Buffalos.

This could've happened in the Battle of Britain if they hadn't developed the Hurricane. The RAF was pretty much a social club with their obsolete Gladiator Biplane.

I heard that the Chinese only barely manage to hold off the invasion with some help from Soviet Russia and the Japanese ground force at that time were horrible.

Also, Ki-43 sometimes also called as "Army Zero" as Ki-43 and A6Ms look quite similar.

It (more or less) happened with every military on every side at some point in the war. Its just that the earlier ones get most of the attention for highlighting the flat-footedness of most countries at the beginning of the conflict.

For example, despite the fact that most militaries were moving towards/had semi-automatic rifles as standard issue by the end of the war, Japan kept/used the Type 38 bolt action rifle as the standard issue rifle up until the end of the war despite plans to defend mainland Japan in a land battle when the Allies inevitably invaded.

The particular battle here could be different; the fairy pilot noted that she already lost 30 or so of her friends.

A good chunk of the Kuomintang armies were actually the armies of warlords dubiously loyal to the KMT regime and Chiang Kai-shek's priority was eliminating his political rivals first and then the Japanese.

Chiang once said: "the Japanese are a disease of the skin, the Communists are a disease of the heart".

It is the same, the Japanese Wiki said that the Chinese force was composed of 19 I-15s and 15 I-16s which total of 34 biplanes while the Japanese has 13 A6Ms. Since Sakazaki didn't put a date of this event, he might be using different source.

And beside the event was the only largest air-to-air battle in the China Front before the Pacific War begins.

I-16s are monoplanes. Other than that, you're about right.

This was pretty much the state of the KMT vs. IJA throughout the entire 2nd Sino-Japanese war, whether it be in the air or on the ground. A bunch of volunteers and conscripts with little to no training and obsolete equipment getting their asses handed to them by Imperial Japan while the latter handed out warcrimes like they were out of season.

You can imagine why we're still pissed at Japan.

And you wonder why the Americans stepped in.

With their fancy P40s and P51Ds and whatnot.

I assume this is pre-Flying Tigers.

I think it is a real shame to boast of such victory over rivals with so inferior equipments...

The Ki-43 also has a weaker armament, two 7.7mm or 12.7mm machine guns as opposed to the two 7.7mm machine guns and two 20mm cannons that the A6M had.
