I think it's rather interesting that in yohane's Touhou world, the default is a "girlfriend". There's another that have Mima using 娘 to refer to her lover (or lover-to-be, anyway).

Note that even though I translated that コ as "girlfriend", technically, it's not necessarily a girl.
Just technically.
子 is overwhelmingly used for girls.

There are no men in yohane's realm, if you don't belive look through some of his doujins. Anyway girlfriend in this case is completely accurate
