    I didn't notice at first when I took a photo of this spot, but when I looked later, this little one was square in the shot.

    It flew off with all its might.

    Appreciate the help, ChaosKnight, but the "eraku" in the first panel refers to the bird cries, not the birds themselves, so "awful" shouldn't precede "birds". Also, I figure both parents are calling for the chick, thus the plural in panels 1 and 2.

    Birds are such finnicky beings, you can never fully tame them unless you rear them right out of the egg. I've had the (mis)fortune of trying to rear several sparrow and waterhen hatchlings... Please don't ask any further.

    Evidently, though, if you managed to raise them past their first molt, you're home free. A friend of mine successfully raised a Sooty-headed Bulbul and it'll stay wherever he goes, even after it could fly freely on its own. That's a bird's instinct for ya.
