Cartridge is the catch-all tag for ammunition of various sorts. (Presumably, one of the gun nuts that hangs around here insisted upon proper terminology rather than the colloquial term.)

And to give you a hint of what it's done to MY mind...

Yamato's bra is supposed to be made of expended Type-91 shells in her canon artwork, which means that they're supposed to be the caliber of her... cannons. (Ah-ha-ha.) Hence, the Type-91s here are definitely not proportional.

They're not even consistently sized in this picture, as the cartridges strapped to her thigh are clearly larger than the ones in her... magazine.

But isn't shell the proper term for naval artillery ammunition? Shells are large caliber and filled with an explosive charge. Naval artillery shells can contain multiple cartridges but the whole is called a shell. Generally when people insist on using the term cartridge they are are referring to small arms cartridges that people tend to call bullets (which are actually just the projectile tip) Shell should be a proper term when talking about naval artillery.
